Groups to host voter registration events
Several groups are hosting voter registration events in the coming days.
Several churches and community groups have joined together to host events, while a voter registration drive focusing on the American Indian and Latino communities is also set.
The deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 3 election is Oct. 9.
Crown Heights United Methodist Church, Mosaic United Methodist ChurchOK C and Northeast Missionary Baptist Church have agreed to unite across denominational lines to help community members register to vote and request absentee ballots. The churches also will offer free notarization services for absentee ballots.
The trio of churches will offer the services from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Mary's Swap Meet, NE 23 and Midwest Boulevard. Crown Heights United Methodist, 1020 NW 37, and Mosaic United Methodist, 3131 NW 50, will each offer free notarization events for absentee ballots from 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 18.
Meanwhile, Rock the Native Vote and Voto Latino will host a voter registration event with support from the Oklahoma City Thunder. It is set for 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Wheeler Ferris Wheel in the Wheeler District, 1701 S Western.
Tuesday's event, held in conjunction with National Voter Registration Day, will include voter registration tables, live music, dance demonstrations and food trucks. Also, booths will be set up to help participants complete the 2020 census.
The Rock the Native Vote 2020 campaign is administered by the Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference of the United Methodist Church. Voto Latino is a grassroots civic engagement organization focused on educating, empowering and engaging Latino voters.
On Sept. 26, volunteers from Trinity Presbyterian Church and the League of Women Voters of Oklahoma County will assist people with voter registration from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot at Trinity, 2301 NE 23.
Social distancing will be observed and visitors are asked to wear a mask or one will be provided. Those registering to vote will need to have their driver's license number, ID card number or the last four digits of their Social Security number.
