Versatile Hendren gives Piedmont a spark

- By Nick Sardis

PIEDMONT — Caden Hendren's ability to provide a spark has been crucial for the Piedmont football team this season.

The senior wide receiver and outside linebacker is a versatile weapon, and his talent was on full display Friday against Noble.

“He had an impact in every phase of the game,” Piedmont coach Jeff Hall said.

Hendren had a 90-yard kickoff return for a score, four carries for 65 yards and 14 tackles. He also returned an interception 60 yards for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter to seal the Wildcats' 29-20 home win against Noble (1-2).

For his performance, The Oklahoman's staff has

named Hendren its Player of the Week.

Class 5A third-ranked Piedmont is 2-1, and Hendren played a big role in both of the team's victories.

The Wildcats, who run the flexbone offense, completed two passes in their season-opening win against El Reno on Sept. 4. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Hendren caught both passes

and scored each time.

“He has gotten better every week,” Hall said. “He's a hard worker. He's a kid that puts the time in and knows the game plan and each week has gotten steadily better. We're asking a lot of him.”

Hen dr en is being recruited to play strong safety and outside linebacker at the next level.

He holds just one Division I offer (Eastern Michigan), but that list should grow if he continues playing at such a high level.

“The season has been weird since it had limited practices throughout the summer and stuff like that, not being able to see the team and coaches,” Hendren said. “But I think we've put our work in enough in the summer to do good, but we definitely need to pick it up a little bit.”

Along with starring on the football team, Hendren plays basketball and competes in track and field.

Hall understands Hendren's rare athletic ability and has him play multiple positions. Hendren has an open mind and is willing to play wherever his coaches need him.

“It's kind of day by day,” he said.
