Celebrate your local comic shops on Nov. 25
Local Comic Shop Day will be celebrated in 2020, with some changes in store.
The event, which previously has been held on a Saturday, will be on Wednesday, Nov. 25, in 2020. Stores won't have to register in advance this year to participate; instead they'll simply order the products from their distributors.
Local Comic Shop Day is a six-year-old event conceived and implemented by ComicsPRO comic book specialty retailers to call attention to locally owned independent comic-book stores.
Marco Davanzo, executive director of ComicsPRO — the organization of comic-book retailers that runs Local Comic Shop Day — says the goal this year remains the same, even as some specifics have changed.
The day is intended “to get comic fans into their local shop for the holidays ( and) to celebrate the local comic shop,” Davanzo said in a news release. While registration isn't required, stores who register with ComicsPRO will be featured on the official site.
The two largest publishers, Marvel and DC Comics, have announced exclusive covers for this year's promotion.
Marvel will release an exclusive cover by Nikko Henrichon for the X-Men title “X of Swords: Destruction” #1. DC will release a metallic foil ink variant of “The Other History of the DC Universe,” with a cover by Jamal Campbell.
Boom! Studios has announced a lineup of five exclusive foil variant covers for the day, including two new titles based on the
action franchise “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.”
Boom! Studios' foil covers include:
• “Mighty Morphin” #1 by Goñi Montes; “Power Rangers” #1 by Peach Momoko; “Dune: House Atreides” #2 by artist J.G. Jones; “Lumberjanes” #75 by artist and series co-writer Kat Leyh and “Something is Killing the Children” #1, by series artist Werther Dell'Edera.
• Another publisher has plans for a graphic novel release. “True War Stories,” published by Z2 Comics, is a 260-page full color graphic novel anthology containing 15 true tales of American service members overseas to be released on Local Comic Shop Day.
• Dark Horse Comics also has a Local Comic Shop Day release with the Netflix tie-in “Witcher: Fading Memories” #1 . The series stars the game's protagonist, Geralt.
