With Lawrence out with COVID, freshman QB takes over at Clemson

With star quarterbac­k Trevor Lawrence sidelined for at least Saturday' s game against Boston College after testing positive for COVID- 19, Clemson is expected to turn the offense over to another former five-star prospect who ranked among the nation's best players in his recruiting class.

True freshman D. J. Uiagalelei (pronounced: oo-ee-AHN-gah-lehlay), from St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower, California, chose the Tigers over dozens of offers from the nation's top programs, including Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State and Oklahoma.

Since verb ally committing in May 2019, U ia gale lei has been identified as Clemson' s quarterbac­k of the future once Lawrence leaves for the NFL. Lawrence, a junior, said earlier this season that this year would be his last, though he hedged on that statement in remarks made this week.

“He has everything that the great ones we've had (had), just bigger,” coach Dab oS win neysa id of Uiagalelei last December.

Fewer bowls scheduled for 2020 season

The college football bowl season is moving forward as planned – for the most part, and at least for now.

Bowl Season organizers on Friday announced a 37- game post season schedule starting Dec. 19– apart ia lr eduction from the record 43 major college games that been planned before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Six games were not on the schedule released Friday, including two new omissions: The Quick Lane Bowl in Detroit and Las Vegas Bowl. Before Friday, four bowl games already had bowed out of the lineup this season because of issues related to the pandemic: The Red box Bowl, Hawaii Bowl, Bahamas Bowl and Holiday Bowl, an annual staple in San Diego since 1978.

Bowl organizers said that a decision regarding the Las Vegas Bowl will be announced “in the near future.” The Quick Lane Bowl said on its website it was disappoint­ed about not having a game t his year but is planning to come back in 2021, along with the other postponed games.
