Christmas in the Park marks 25 years

- Staff reports

Yukon's Christmas in the Park has been lighting the holidays for a quarter of a century.

Just before Thanksgiving, motorists will once again be able to see a glowing greeting: “Merry Christmas from the City of Yukon.”

To access the l i ghted holiday spectacular, eastbound drivers on Interstate 40 should take Exit 138 (or Exit 139, if coming from the west) then follow the pointing snowmen to the main entrance of Christmas in the Park.

There will be three ways to enjoy Christmas in the Park. Besides driving the winding paths, guests will be able to get up-close to the lights with a walking tour. Or, the Santa Express can take guests on a tour of the lights that adorn Chisholm Trail Park.

Eve nina year that has been clouded by the COVID-19 pandemic, the city's animated and colorful lights can offer some holiday magic and cheer.

“The great thing about Christmas in the Park is that it easily lends itself to social distancing,” said Jim Crosby, city manager of Yukon. “The lights are spread out over 100 acres, and the majority of our visitors take the drive-thru tour and stay in their car.”

Now featuring millions of lights over three inter-connected parks, the original event started out as a handful of displays around t he Yukon Community Center.

“We wanted to spread Christmas cheer in the community, so we decorated the Community Center,” Crosby said. “Year after year, more and more people, businesses and organizations jumped on board to add to the attraction. With their help, it turned into the magnificent spectacle it is today.”

The Yukon community officially will open Christmas in the Park at 6 p.m. Nov. 21. This holiday spectacular then will run nightly from 6 to 11 p.m. through New Year's Eve.
