As the U.S. Capitol was stormed Tuesday by rioters protesting President Donald Trump' s election defeat, some of Oklahoma's public officials spoke out against the violence on social media.

Thousands gathered in Washington, D.C., to protest as Congress began the process of certifying the Electoral College votes from states.

Rioters tore down police barricades and broke windows, eventually making their way into the House and Senate chambers. Lawmakers, staff and others were evacuated as the violence escalated.

Here is a look at what some Oklahoma lawmakers had to say:

Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt: “I have al ways protected and supported the right for peaceful demonstration, but we cannot stand for violence. What is happening at the U.S. Capitol right now is unacceptable and needs to stop immediately. This is not what America is about. Praying for the safety of all.”

Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt: “They have seized the U.S. Capitol for the purpose of stopping the counting of legally cast votes in a presidential election .... The ongoing attempted overthrow of our government will fail. The republic will survive, but only because of those who are standing for truth.”

Former U.S. Rep. Kendra Horn: “Those storming the Capitol, threatening Capitol police, members of Congress, their staffs, and journalists are not protestors. They are seeking to undermine the fundamental tenets of the Constitution and prohibit t he peaceful transition of power after a free and fair election.”

Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter: “The violence at the U.S. Capitol is appalling and unacceptable. I hope Oklahomans join me in praying for those hurt in today's attack, the safety of those attempting to restore order, and peace and healing for our nation.”

Oklahoma House Minority Leader Rep. Emily Virgin: “Make no mistake about it, what we're watching unfold at the U.S. Capitol right now isa coup attempt in cited by the President, aided by Republican senator sand representatives.”

Norman Mayor Breea Clark: “We' re better than this. We've lost our way. When this is over, it will be up to the next generation of leadership to fix this.” The Oklahoma Republican Party: “Vandalism and violence is NOT the answer! Civil disobedience is a Constitutional right. While this is an emotional time, we must continue in the process our forefathers put in our Constitution for times such as this. Violence towards persons and property are not part of that process.”
