Metro area schools warn patrons about chocolate milk recall

- By Don Mecoy Staff writer dmecoy@oklahoman.com

Local schools districts are urging patrons who received meals from the districts late last week to throw out milk products after Hiland Dairy recalled chocolate milk produced at its Norman plant.

Hiland Dairy recalled the one-half pint 1% low fat chocolate milk produced at its Norman facility because some of the chocolate milk may contain food- grade sanitizers, which could make someone sick if they drank it.

While only eight cases, or 400 individual milk containers, were affected by the contamination, the company recalled all the half-pints of chocolate milk produced on that date — a total of 240,000 milk containers.

Oklahoma City Public Schools advised families who picked up meals at the end of last week at any of the district's drive-thru locations to dispose of any milk product that was part of the meal.

“OKCPS School Nutrition Service is completing an audit of our Hiland Dairy products at all schools to determine if we received any of the recalled products,” the district said in a statement. “OKCPS will properly discard any recalled products to ensure i t's not served in cafeterias or at our

drive-thru locations.”

Edmond Public Schools said milk from that batch was distributed last week in district food deliveries at Heritage Elementary, Frontier Elementary and perhaps other schools. The district urged patrons to check their milk for the batch information and dispose of any from the recall.

The recall includes OneHalf Pint Hiland Dairy 1% Low Fat Chocolate Milk with a UPC code of 72060-001563, and a sell-by date of Jan. 27, 2021. The plant code is 4025.

Other districts, including Moore, Mustang, Putnam City and Piedmont, told patrons to dispose of any milk received from the schools matching those product codes.

The affected products were distributed to institutional customers in the Oklahoma City area, western Oklahoma, and in Dallas, San Antonio and Tyler, Texas.

Hi land Dairy initially learned of a potential issue and then confirmed after internal quality-control testing at its Norman plant. The company contacted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to initiate the product recall.

There are no other Hiland products associated with the recall.

Consumers with questions may contact Hiland Dairy seven days a week f rom 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. via email at www.hilanddairy.com/ contact-us.
