THINGS TO CARRY IN THE CAR DURING A WINTER STORM

- By Dale Denwalt Staff writer ddenwalt@oklahoman.com

Emergency officials have asked people to stay off the roads during this historic winter storm that has clogged streets and triggered dangerous accidents on state highways.

If you must travel during winter weather, however, there are a few things you'll need to take with you. Before leaving, make sure exhaust pipes are clear to keep deadly gases from lea king into the vehicle.

AAA Oklahoma also notes that cars made after 2007 don' t need to be warmed up before driving, as it only takes about 30 seconds for the engine to become lubricated.

Extra clothing/blankets: One of the biggest dangers of driving in snow is the possibility of getting stranded. If this happens, that extra coat or warm blanket will come in handy while waiting for a rescuer.

Plenty of gasoline: AAA Oklahoma recommends keeping gas tanks filled at least halfway. That way, the car can keep running if you' re stranded. The extra weight also helps with traction.

Portable phone charger/ battery: Portable smartphone chargers are inexpensive and small enough to fit in a glove box. Before heading out on a trip, make sure it's fully charged in case your phone can't be charged using the vehicle's power.

Heating packs: Retail and camping supply stores sell chemically activated heating packs, like handwarmers, that can be used if the heat goes out in your car or home. The downside is the heat won't last forever. Packs should also be checked regularly, if stored, for leaks or accidental activation.

Flashlight or flares: These can be used to mark your position or alert

emergency personnel if you need assistance. Make sure to keep fresh batteries in flashlights and safely store flares according to manufacturer' s guidelines. Bright-colored cloth also can be used as a marker.

Snacks and water: Highenergy foods can be a lifesaver in a stranded vehicle, especially during severe weather that hampers rescue efforts. Having a snack nearby can also keep you from making unnecessary detours.

First aid kit: A basic first aid kit is useful to have in case there's an accident or injury on the road.
