OU holder Jones is injured in bar brawl
Attorney: Sooner senior was ` trying to de-escalate' situation
The video of OU football player Spencer Jones getting into a fight at Logie's on the Corner in mid-February has been viewed more than 8 million times just five days after it was posted.
Police weren't called at the time of the incident, which began near midnight Feb. 13 in Norman.
On Feb. 16, Jones spoke with police by phone after suffering a serious eye injury in the fight, according to reports. Jones' is the only name listed on the report, which lists the Sooners' holder as the victim of assault and battery.
“All involved parties have been identified,” the report reads. “No arrests have been made.”
The investigation remains active.
The video begins with Jones
pointing at another man, apparently his friend, as the other man repeats “look at me” as he takes a look at the mirror in the bathroom at the Campus Corner bar.
Jones twice repeats “Get the (expletive) out of here” to a man, identified on social media as OU student Walker Brown, whose nose is already bloodied.
Brown looks toward a man he was with, identified as Brown's brother, B ray den, then Jones' apparent friend pushes Walker Brown, who then wipes blood onto his left hand.
Brown rubs his bloodied hand on Jones' face, then delivers a series of punches in quick succession before picking up Jones and slamming him to the bathroom floor before resuming throwing punches, including one to the left side of Jones' face just after they get to the floor.
According to reports from the OU Daily and The Athletic, the fight left Jones with a broken left orbital — the bones surrounding the
eye — that required a fourhour surgery to repair.
Near the end of the video, Jones' friend is picked up and slammed hard against the bathroom wall. The friend doesn't appear to move as the other man begins punching.
Norman attorney Woody Glass, who is representing Jones, did not return a call for comment.
Glass told The Athletic that Jones and his friend were about to leave Logie's when the friend went to the restroom. When he didn't emerge after 15 minutes, Jones walked in to check on his friend, who was involved in an argument.
Jones was “trying to deescalate” the situation, Glass told the site.
OU spokesman Mike Houck said the university was aware of the incident but declined further comment.
Brown's attorney, Steve Stice, told The Oklahoman that Brown “is eager to give his version of events,” but he declined further comment, referencing the ongoing criminal investigation as well as potential civil litigation.
In a statement on a GoFundMe account set up to help pay for Brown's attorney fees and medical bills, Stice said “there is more to the story than what is depicted in the video. What is not shown is the original assault and battery suffered by Mr. Walker at the hands of Mr. Jones and
his friend shortly before the captured footage.”
Brown suffered a torn bicep as a result of the incident, which will require surgery, as well as other injuries, Stice said.
“Mr. Walker was legally justified in defending himself in this matter,” the statement read.
The GoFundMe ha d raised more than $26,000 by Wednesday afternoon, just a day after it was created.
“I am the guy in the bathroom fight video,” the GoFundMe description reads .“I have laughed with the funny comments about my cowboy boots and cauliflower ear.”
Jones is from Nashville but his parents are both from Oklahoma and he grew up a Sooners fan. After beginning his college career as a walk-on at Liberty, he transferred to OU, where he has played in all 25 games over the last two seasons, serving as the holder.
Jones was awarded a scholarship during the 2020 season and said he planned on returning for 2021, using the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
