Velma Nelson

BRIDGEPORT, TEXAS - Velma Elaine (Russell) Nelson, born March 9, 1933, passed from this life on April 27, 2021 at the age of 88 years. She was born at home in Harper county Kansas to Archie and Ruth (Davis) Russell, and at the time of her death she was living in Bridgeport, Texas. She graduated from Norwich High School in Norwich, Kansas. Velma attended church and she loved the Lord. During her life, she worked in the grocery business as a meat wrapper. She was an artist and loved to paint but she received the most enjoyment from spending time with family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Jackie Hughbanks. Velma was followed in death 4 days later by her sister, Virgie Hern. She is survived by sisters, Marian Johnson with husband Kenny, and Millie Rosenberger. She is also survived by her daughter, Patricia Mayo with husband Jack, and her sons, Edward “Buddy” Smith with wife Lisa, and Russell Smith with wife Tricia. Grandchildren: Chris Mayo with wife Robin, Jennifer Hamill with husband Billy, Scott Smith with wife Ashley, Elaina, Jessica, and Rebekah Smith. Great-grandchildren: Kynzlee, Ashley, Katelyn, Tanner, Morgan, Logan, Garrett, and Emma. Great-great-grandchildren Josiah and Silas. Visitation will be held at Sunny Lane Funeral Home on Friday, May 7th from 4pm to 8pm and Saturday, May 8th from 10am to 12pm. The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, May 8th at 1pm at Sunny Lane Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow at Dale Cemetery in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
