SHAWNEE — Comic creators both of local and national significance will appear in Shawnee on Saturday for the Uncanny Comic Expo.

Norman-based author J.O. Young created the “Freaks” prose series and has written comics and short stories from InDellible Comics, Okie Comics, and Z Publishing.

Her story “Lobo: A Baron Winter,” published in All New Popular Comics #5 from InDellible, will be on sale at the expo. Young is joined by Edmond artist Kent Clark on the comic-book story.

“Lobo is a Western that is a part of an anthology published by InDellible comics,” Young said. “Lobo was an original Dell character that first appeared in 1956 and is acknowledged as the first Black character to headline his own series in comics.”

In the story, Lobo is a traveler helping folks in need when he comes across a man being beaten by a group of bandits. Lobo quickly intervenes to aid the man. There he learns of a land baron driving people from their homes in an attempt to grow his power and wealth — and that doesn’t sit right with Lobo.

“The story pays homage to the original character and his origins,” Young said. “I had a blast writing for Lobo.”

A second story for InDellible is currently in the works, as is the second season of the “Freaks” anthology series as well.

Other guests set for the show include actor and animator C. Andrew Nelson and comic-book artist Georges Jeanty. Jeanty is the artist of “Age of X-Man,” “The American Way,” and “Serenity,” among others.

Among Oklahoma guests, writer James Hostler (“The Bobcat”) and creators from Equinox Comics are scheduled to be in attendance.

This is the third year for the Expo, created by organizer Peter Purin. In June, the Oklahoma Travel Industry Association awarded the Expo with the

RedBud award for outstanding new event.

The event will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Grand Casino Hotel & Resort, 777 Grand Casino Blvd. in Shawnee. General admission tickets are $15.

The event will be adhering to the COVID-19 protocols set by the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, which will require the wearing of masks upon entering the property.
