3-2-1 KICKOFF
STILLWATER — Oklahoma State’s first road game of the season is a latenight matchup on the famous blue turf at Boise State. The Cowboys and Broncos kick off at 8 p.m. Saturday on FS1. Here are three players to watch, two big questions and one wild prediction for the game:
3 players to watch
Cornerback Jarrick Bernard-Converse: Boise State’s rushing attack has been abysmal through two games — totaling 161 yards and averaging 2.2 yards per carry — leading to a lot of passing from quarterback Hank Bachmeir. His top target is Khalil Shakir, who figures to be Bernard-Converse’s assignment.
Quarterback Spencer Sanders: There was a lot of room for improvement for Sanders after his season debut last week, namely protecting the football. But there is no doubt his ability to run aids the Cowboys’ struggling offense.
Offensive lineman Hunter Woodard: Earlier this week, OSU coach Mike Gundy said on his radio show that he thinks Woodard will make his season debut following a preseason injury. Last season, Woodard was graded as the fifth-best offensive guard in college football by Pro Football Focus.
2 big questions
Can the Cowboys’ offense get going? Through two games, OSU ranked No. 96 in total offense and No. 112 in rushing offense among all FBS schools. Boise State ranks No. 111 in total defense. It’s possible this is the Cowboys’ week. A big reason for the struggles is injuries forcing young players to play.
Will the Cowboys force multiple turnovers? Through two games, OSU has just two turnovers — both fumble recoveries against Missouri State. A season ago, OSU forced 16 total turnovers.
1 wild prediction
OSU linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez finishes with at least 20 tackles. The most sure-handed tackler on the team, Rodriguez leads all FBS players with 28 total tackles. On a night of defense for both teams, Rodriguez establishes himself as the best defender on the field.
