Robertson ties NCAA record, but Texas routs OU

AUSTIN, Texas — DeYona Gaston scored 19 points and Texas routed No. 14 Oklahoma 78-58 on Wednesday night at Moody Center in Austin, Texas, as the Sooners went 1-for-17 shooting in the third quarter and missed 17 straight shots in the second half.

Taylor Jones scored 16 points and Shaylee Gonzales 12 with seven assists, six rebounds and four steals for the Longhorns (15-6, 6-2 Big 12 Conference), who joined Oklahoma and No. 18 Iowa State on top of the league standings.

Skylar Vann scored 13 points for Oklahoma, which shot 46% and had 24 turnovers.

Oklahoma guard Taylor Robertson tied the Division I women’s basketball record for 3-pointers as she made two. She now has 497, which matches the mark Ohio State star Kelsey Mitchell set from 2014 to 2018.

Robertson is a fifth-year senior who reached the record in two fewer games than Mitchell.

It was the worst offensive game of the season for the Sooners (16-3, 6-2), who had their five-game winning streak snapped. They entered averaging 87.3 points a game. Oklahoma’s previous low was 69 points in a win.

The Sooners play at Iowa State and Oklahoma State is at Texas, both on Saturday.

Cowgirls hold off Wildcats

STILLWATER — Oklahoma State junior Taylen Collins had hardly played in the second half, sitting on the bench with four fouls.

But as Kansas State cut the Cowgirls’ 16-point lead to five midway through the fourth quarter, OSU coach Jacie Hoyt sent her versatile forward back in the game.

On OSU’s next possession, Collins grabbed an offensive rebound and got fouled, hitting two free throws to give the Cowgirls enough cushion to hold on for an 82-74 victory over K-State on Wednesday night at Gallagher-Iba Arena.

Collins fouled out having played just over five minutes in the Cowgirls’ Bedlam loss at OU last Saturday, but she wasn’t hesitant when Hoyt put her on the floor with a little over four minutes left Wednesday night.

Collins had a pair of free throws with 13.6 seconds left as well, ending her night with 16 points and eight rebounds as the Cowgirls (14-6, 4-4 Big 12) avenged an early January loss to the Wildcats (13-8, 2-6).

Four Cowgirls scored in double-figures, with Naomie Alnatas and Terryn Milton at 17 apiece, each adding seven rebounds and six assists as well. Lior Garzon scored all 11 of her points in the second half.

Extra points

TENNIS: Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina reached her second final in the past three Grand Slam tournaments by beating Victoria Azarenka 7-6 (4), 6-3 at the Australian Open on Thursday.

In Saturday’s final, Rybakina will take on either No. 5 Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus or unseeded Magda Linette of Poland.

Sabalenka took a 9-0 mark in 2023 into Thursday’s second semifinal.

NFL: The Carolina Panthers have hired Frank Reich as their new head coach following an extensive search. The 61-year-old Reich joins the Panthers after spending the past four-plus seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, where he went 40-33-1 as head coach before being fired on Nov. 7.
