NASCAR driver’s in-laws, nephew killed in possible murder-suicide
MUSKOGEE – NASCAR racer Jimmie Johnson's in-laws were found dead this week in what Oklahoma law enforcement officers are investigating as a murder-suicide.
Muskogee police told FOX23 that Terry Janway, 68, is suspected of shooting and killing her husband, Jack Janway, 69, and their grandson, Dalton Janway, 11. Terry and Jack's daughter, Chandra Janway, is the wife of NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson.
According to FOX23, Terry called 911 around 9 p.m. Monday and reported a disturbance and someone with a gun. When officers got on scene, they saw a person lying in the hallway inside the front door.
Police said they then heard gunshots from inside the house, and they pulled the person in the hallway out of the house. Officers started making announcements for any other people in the house to come out, and once enough officers arrived, they searched the home. Two more people were found dead inside.
Police told FOX23 they are investigating this as a murder-suicide and they do not believe there is a threat to the community.
Law enforcement officials consider Terry a suspect, per TMZ and FOX23, although the incident is under investigation with no known motive.
Jack was a prominent member of the community and ran Janway Chiropractic and Acupuncture in Muskogee, said Mayor Marlon Coleman.
“It was traumatizing to find out that a long-standing family who had made so many contributions to our community were involved in this type of incident. It was even more bone-chilling to find out there was a child involved,” Coleman told FOX23. “I knew Dr. Janway. Dr. Janway has worked on me. We've been acquaintances for a very, very long time since I've been in Muskogee.
“Just knowing that it was him and his family took a different toll on me.”
Johnson, a seven-time NASCAR Cup champion, is scheduled to race in a Chicago street event this weekend.
He and Chandra were married in 2004 and have two daughters.
