OU’s 2024-25 academic calendar on agenda

- Murray Evans

NORMAN – The first day of classes for the fall 2024 semester at the University of Oklahoma will begin on Aug. 19, according to the proposed schedule to be presented Thursday to OU regents.

The regents, who govern OU, Rogers State University and Cameron University, will hold the public portion of their final meeting of 2023 starting at 3:30 p.m. inside the Oklahoma Memorial Union.

The calendar for the 2024-25 academic year is on the agenda as an informational item, meaning the regents don’t need to approve it. The calendar begins with a summer session from May 13 through Aug. 2.

At OU’s main campus in Norman, the first eight-week session of the fall semester will run from Aug. 19 until Oct. 11, with the second eight-week session set for Oct. 14 through Dec. 6. Students will be out of class for Thanksgiving break from Nov. 27-Dec. 1. Final exams will run through Dec. 13.

OU’s fall break generally is the Friday before the OU-Texas football game in October. The academic calendar will be updated when the date is set by OU President Joseph Harroz’s office.

After a winter session that will run through Dec. 16-Jan. 10, the spring 2025 semester will start Jan. 13 and run until final exams end May 9. The semester’s first eight-week session will be Jan. 13 to March 7, with the second eight-week session lasting from March 10 to May 9. Spring break is set for March 15-23.

Graduation ceremonies would be scheduled from May 9-11.

The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education authorize university presidents to approve an academic calendar each year. The calendar is then submitted to the State Regents by Dec. 1 before the summer semester. Harroz is presenting the schedule to OU regents for informational purposes before submitting it to the state regents.
