This past season of the Canastota Seed Exchange, which was the first endeavor, was a great success with 55 participants and 78 varied types of seeds from “Martha Washington” asparagus to “Rattlesnack” pole beans. In total, 290 seed packets taken by the members. The staff was excited when the Celebration Children’s Center joined the Exchange and planted seeds for the young gardeners to grow and learn. The library also started a small vegetable garden in the Library Perennial Garden.

They are asking that a portion of the seeds you save from the strongest, tastiest and most vigorous plants to be returned to the Seed Exchange to keep the library self-sustaining. The library is always looking for old-fashioned and handed-down seeds, also of interest are gardening tips and stories. Commercial seeds are accepted as long as they are non-hybrid and open-pollinated. The library has an extensive collection of gardening related books. Stop by and take a look.
