RFA boys, girls beat VVS on home turf
Evans, Renwick shoot well for VVS
ROME >> The Vernon-Verona- Sherrill girls golf team followed up its victory over previously undefeated Rome Free Academy on Monday with an even lower score on the road on Tuesday.
Unfortunately for the Red Devils, the Black Knights went lower on their home course.
Coach Dave Petrelli’s team broke 200, posting a 196-203 victory on the front nine at Rome Country Club to avenge the loss a day earlier.
“They just had better scores than we did,” said VVS coach Bill Wiley. “We shot 203 and we don’t usually play very well here so I think that’s probably a pretty good score for us. They just beat us today, that happens in this game.”
Olivia Evans, one of the Red Devils who had struggled at the course in the past, shot a 41 in the loss. The sophomore had a birdie on the par-4 sixth hole, hitting a 170-yard seven-iron within two feet of the hole and sinking the close putt. Evans also parred the par-3 second and third holes.
“Just my improvement from last year,” said Evans on her improvement at Rome. “My shots just improved. I don’t really have a superstition about this course so my overall game just improved from last year.”
Kaitlyn Mastracco
matched Evans’ score for the hosts and Tessa Zmudosky shot a 47 for RFA in the victory. Sarah Kirk shot a 53 and Hannah Casadei finished with a 55 to round out the scoring for the Black Knights.
Molly Coolican shot a 52, the second-lowest score for the Red Devils, with Sara McCall and Cecelia Kaido each shooting 55.
“We just can’t seem to put them all together at once,” said Wiley. “Just inconsistent up and down. (Evans) has been solid all year long.
“The long range goal is states. When it comes right down to it, we want to go to the states. We got a nice taste of it last year and I know that (Evans) wants to do it again this year.”
The schools also played a boys match on the back nine on Tuesday afternoon and the Black Knights went low in that contest as well. Brian Birnie shot a two-under 34 for RFA, leading the team in a 205233 victory. The 205 was the lowest score of the season for the hosts, much to the delight of coach Wes Cupp.
James Renwick shot a 39 for the Red Devils in defeat.
“That’s a goodscore onthe road for him to qualify for sectionals,” said VVS coach Todd Riolo. “But the rest of the guys, when you’re on the road it’s a whole different game.”
