Cazenovia routs Skaneateles
Defending state champ cruises to Section III Class B semifinals
CAZENOVIA » Cazenovia wasted no time taking a lead in its Section III Class B football quarterfinal against Skaneateles, scoring on the game’s first possession.
Much like the rain that hit the area over the weekend, the Lakers never let up.
Coach Jay Stein horst’s squad opened up a 44-0 lead going into halftime and cruised to a 51-0 victory.
Cody Thorp set the tone for the game on the opening possession for the No. 1 seed, breaking off a 41-yard run on the fourth play of the contest. On the drive, the senior carried six times for 67 yards and scored on an 11-yard run with 8:27 to play in the first quarter. A mishandled snap on the PAT kick try kept the score 6-0.
Thorp was far from done, intercepting a Pat Hackler pass on No. 8 Skaneateles’ third play from-scrimmage and returning the ball to the visitors’ 15. The senior carried the ball for three straight plays, scor- ing from a yard out and punching in the conversion run as well for a 14-0 advantage.
Hacker continued to struggle throwing the ball in the rain on the next possession and was intercepted again. Anthony Vecchiarelli forced the turnover returned the pick 52 yards for another touchdown for the No. 1 seed. Thorp again converted for two, putting Cazenovia ahead 22-0 with 2:54 to play in the opening period.
