ORISKANY>> Mary C. Dixon, 90, of the Eastern Star Home in Oriskany, passed away peacefully on Feb. 22, 2017.

Mary was a long time resident of Verona and Oneida before moving in her later years to the Villas in Clinton and eventually the Eastern Star Home, both wonderful residences where she received exceptional care and loving attention.

Mary was born in Sherburne, N.Y. on Oct. 29, 1926, the eldest child of Archie and Katherine Gaines Conley. She graduated from Sherburne High School and Georgian Court College in Lakewood, N.J. After graduation, she worked for B Altman and Company in New York City and later with Carrier Corp. in Syracuse. She married Thomas H. Dixon on May 30, 1953 at St. Malachy’s Church in Sherburne. Mr. Dixon died on April 9, 1970.

Mary moved her four children to Verona and earned her master of education. This allowed her to begin a rewarding, joyful teaching career with the Oneida City School District. She retired in 1988 after many happy years teaching third grade at the Durhamville and Seneca Street schools. She was much beloved by her many students whose lives she touched and who remembered her for many years when they invited her to their graduation parties, weddings or just stopped her in church or the store to update her about their lives.

Mary was a parishioner of St. Helena’s Church in Sherrill. She was an active volunteer for many years with the Madison County Cancer Society and with the Oneida Healthcare Center Aux- iliary. She was a member of Catholic Daughters and the Madison County Retired Teachers. An avid golfer, Mary was a long time member of Pleasant Knolls Golf Club.

She is survived by her children, Tom and Shannon Dixon of Sherrill, Mary and Mike Rogan of Victor, Chris and Jackie Dixon of Moon Township, Pa., and her brother, Thomas Conley of Raleigh, N.C.

She was predeceased by her son, Mark, and her sister, Ann Smith.

Mary is also survived by the joys of her life, her grandchildren: Patrick Dixon of New York City, Amy Dixon of Chicago, Mark Dixon of Raleigh, N.C., Dr. Dan Rogan of New York City, Tim Rogan of New York City, Rory Dixon of Moon Township, Pa. and Drew and Katie Dixon of Berea, Ohio. Mary was also the proud greatgrandmother of Oliver Dixon of Berea, Ohio. Aunt Mary Jane is also survived by many special nieces and nephews and friends from her years in Sherburne, Syracuse, Verona, and Oneida.

An early spring Memorial Mass at St. Helena’s Church in Sherrill, followed by a reception in her honor will be announced at a later date. Contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the VVS Educational Foundation for the Mark T. Dixon Scholarship Fund. Arrangements are under the direction of the Campbell-Dean Funeral Home, Inc., 260 Main St., Oneida.
