CANASTOTA >> Ronald V. Kent, 91, of 3052 Pine Ridge Road, Canastota, passed away on Monday, March 13, 2017, at the Oneida Healthcare Extended Care Facility, following a lengthy illness.

He was born on Aug. 21, 1925, in Clifton, N. J., a son of Vernon and Margaret (Roos) Kent.

Ron spent his early years in the Bronx, attending Manhattan High School of Aviation Trades. He later lived in North Syracuse for 30 years, and has lived in Canastota since 1978.

He worked for New York Central, Penn Central, and Conrail for 37 years, retiring in 1986.

Ron was a World War II veteran, serving overseas with the 14th Armored Division of the US Army.

He enjoyed camping, hiking, rock hounding, traveling, yardwork, and spending time with his family.

Ron married Eleanor I. Thomas on Oct. 4, 1947, in Syracuse. Eleanor died on Jan. 27, 2012.

Surviving are: three daughters and two sonsin-law, Janice and Duane Schiebler, Dawn and David Todd, and Deidre Kent and her companion, Gregory Wallace, all of Canastota; one sister-in-law, Phyllis Kent of Idaho; three grandchild­ren, Brent and Robin Schiebler, Chad and Jennifer Schiebler, and Marcus Todd; six great-grandchild­ren, Ashley Hammes, Molly, Nathan, Isabella, Cam, and Caleb Schiebler; a special friend, Konny Burk; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Ron was predecease­d by a brother, Arthur Kent.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 16, 2017, at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James St., Canastota. Pastor Donna Chapman of the Whitelaw Presbyteri­an Church will officiate. Spring burial will be in Whitelaw Cemetery, Canastota. There will be no calling hours. In his memory, contributi­ons may be made to the American Legion Charles Miller Post No. 140, P.O. Box 13, Canastota, N.Y. 13032, or to Wanderers’ Rest Humane Associatio­n, Inc., P.O. Box 535, Canastota, N.Y. 13032, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
