CANASTOTA >> Peter Juravich, 93, of 401 W. Lewis St., Canastota, died on Tuesday, March 28, 2017, at Oneida Healthcare, following a brief illness.

He was born on March 6, 1924, in Bartlett, N.Y., a son of Stephen and Mary (Melko) Juravich.

Peter spent his early years in Bartlett, graduating from Westmorela­nd High School. He later graduated from Utica College, and Syracuse University, with a master’s degree in education. Peter has lived in Canastota most of his life.

He married Josephine M. Lomonaco on Aug. 20, 1955, in Canastota.

Peter was an elementary school teacher at the John D. George Elementary School in Verona for 30 years, retiring in 1985. He loved teaching and the many children he taught. Peter, also, served as principal of the Sherrill Migrant School. He was a member of St. Agatha’s Church in Canastota, where he was a Eucharisti­c Minister, and taught religious education.

Peter was active in his community, and was a member of the Canastota Lions Club and the Canastota Civic Club. He served as a trustee on the Canastota Village Board, and was an assessor for the Town of Lenox. Peter, also, taught AARP Defensive Driving Classes for many years. He and his wife, Josephine, received the Roses of the Living Award, for their many years of volunteer work together.

He and his wife enjoyed traveling, visiting many countries.

Surviving besides his wife, Josephine, are: two sons and daughters-inlaw, Stephen and Kim Juravich of Oswego, and Gerard and Iryna Juravich of Owego; two daughters and a son-in-law, JoAnn Stern of New York City, and Kathleen and Robert Cumber of Chittenang­o; seven grandchild­ren, Brittany Juravich, Cory Cumber, Kari Cumber, Cody Cumber, Ostap Juravich, Natalia Juravich, and Christina Juravich; as well as several nieces and nephews. Peter was predecease­d by a daughter, Nancy Lynn Juravich; two brothers, Frederick Juravich, and George Juravich; and three sisters, Ann Kotary, Stella Kotary, and Olga Kochon.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 1, 2017, at St. Agatha’s Church, 329 N. Peterboro St., Canastota, where a Funeral Mass will be held. The Rev. Stephen P. Wirkes will officiate. Burial will be in St. Agatha’s Cemetery, Canastota. Calling hours will be held on Friday, from 5-7 p.m. at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James St., Canastota. In his memory, contributi­ons may be made to St. Agatha’s Church, 329 N. Peterboro St., Canastota, N.Y. 13032, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
