Horse Bonanza showcases 4-H skills

Twenty-five horse lovers from Madison, Oneida and Onondaga counties took part in the annual event.

MORRISVILL­E >> A total of 25 horse lovers from Madison, Oneida and Onondaga counties took part in the Madison County 4-H Horse Bonanza on Saturday, March 4.

In the morning session, 4-H members participat­ed in Horse Bowl, a quiz contest with questions pertaining to equine topics. Pairs of four-person teams competed by responding to questions asked by a contest moderator. Each teamwas given credit for correct answers, and in some cases a penalty for incorrect answers. The team with the highest score at the end of the contest was declared the winner.

In the afternoon, 4-H members participat­ed in Hippol- ogy, where 4-H members exhibited their knowledge and understand­ing of equine science in a competitiv­e setting. The term “Hippology” comes from the Greek “hippo,” meaning horse, and “ology,” meaning “the study of.” Participan­ts demonstrat­ed their experience and knowledge gained in horse judging, quiz bowl, speeches, and hands-on equine management.

Horse Bowl results for the top 10 individual­s of Madison County: In the novice division McKenzie Cordell received third place, Aryana Schneeman received fourth place, Makenna Walrath received fifth place, and Declan Young received sixth place. In the junior divi-

sion Grace Young received first place.

In the senior division Kav Young received fourth place.

Hippology results for the top 10 individual­s of Madison County: In the novice division McKenzie Cordell received second place, Declan Young received fifth place, Aryanna Schneerman received sixth place, and Makenna Walrath received seventh place. In the junior division Grace Young received third place. In the senior division Kav Young received second place.

The 4-H Youth Developmen­t Program provides opportunit­ies for youths ages 5-19 to participat­e in innovative programs where they learn valuable skills, make friends, solve problems, earn awards, practice citizenshi­p and develop leadership abilities.
