Brain boosters at the OPL
Oneida Library
Monday, April 24 at 10 a.m. OPL’s Baby Brain Booster Art. Youth Services Coordinator Megan Gillander will show parents of infants how they can boost their children’s cognitive abilities through the use of basic shapes with high contrast.
Wednesday, April 26, 7 p.m., historian Norman Dann’s presentation on Elizabeth Smith Miller as part of the OPL’s 2017 Centennial Celebration of Women’s Suffrage in NYS. Dann will talk about Miller, the daughter of Gerrit Smith, who was co-founder of the National Women’s Suffrage Association and inventor of “bloomers.” Copies of Dann’s new biography of Miller, “Ballots, Bloomers and Marmalade,” will be available for purchase and signing by the author.
Canal Town Talks
The second in a series of Canastota Canal Town Talks in coordination with the Canastota Public Library will be held on Wednesday, April 26 at 7 p.m. at the Canastota Public Library, 102 W. Center St. Joe DiGiorgio of the Canal Town Museum will highlight the fascinating and humorous history of events behind the lift bridge, its surrounding and its people. Linking the Present to the Past to Enrich the Future will include more stories and slides than before.
The public is invited to attend. Refreshments will be served following the program.
Free movie
Sullivan Free Library in Chittenango will show the movie “Fences” as its Wednesday matinee on April 26 at 1 p.m. The drama, rated PG13 and running 139 min- utes, tells the story of an African-American man raising his family in the 1950s. Admission and popcorn are free; viewers may bring their own beverage and snacks.
Spring/summer hours
The Bridgeport Food Pantry Fresh Food Giveaway is held the fourth Wednesday of each month: April 26, May 24, June 28 and July 26. Numbers for entry handed out starting at 1:30 p.m. Doors open at 3 p.m.
The pantry will be open the third Wednesday of the month: May 17, June 21, and July 19 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and 5-7 p.m. For emergency service, contact Hedrick at 315-699-7976.
Spring Soup & Pie Sale
The annual Spring Soup & Pie Sale at the Munnsville Congregational Church will be held on Friday, April 28 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. You can eat in or take out. Call head for takeouts, 315- 495-6603.
Available soups will be vegetable beef, chicken, split pea with ham, and chili, along with a variety of pies. The cost is $6 for soup, pie and beverage. Quarts of soup or chili will be available.
The church is located on Williams Road in Munnsville.
Pancake breakfast
The Tri-Valley Masonic Lodge at 611 Stone St., Oneida will host an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast on Saturday, April 29 from 8 a.m. until noon. Proceeds from this event will benefit the Rainbow Girls Fidelity Assembly No. 30.
Pancakes (plain, chocolate chip or gluten free), scrambled eggs, home fries, sausage, orange juice and coffee are on the menu. Tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for children 4-12, and free for ages 3 and younger.
Firefighters Ball
The Cazenovia Fire Department will hold its annual Fire Fighters Ball on Saturday, April 29 from 6-11 p.m. at the fire department, 121 Albany St. A barbecue will be served from 6-8 p.m. Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children.
CIT due May 1
Counselor in Training (CIT) applications for Camp Lookout, Madison County Children’s Camp, are now available. They are due by May 1 as are staff applications. A number of openings are available for counselors and support personnel. College students are encouraged to apply.
Areas of specific need include Arts and Craft and the water front — Life Guard Certification and Water Safety Instructor are required for certain positions.

Teen Page Turners
Page Turners Club, the teen book club of the Canastota Public Library, will meet May 3 from 6-7:30 p.m. to discuss “Raven’s Gate” by Anthony Horowitz. Books are available at the circulation desk. The club is open to students in grades 5-10.
Nominees sought
The VVS Central School District seeks nominations for the 2017 VVS Wall of Distinction. The Wall of Distinction recognizes the individual achievements and contributions of past graduates in areas including profession, athletics, business, community service, religion and the arts.
Nominees must have been graduated for at least 10 years. Nomina- tion forms can be found at www.vvsschools.org on the main page under Quick Links. They may also be obtained through the high school principal’s office.

Swiss steak dinner
Vernon United Methodist Church, Route 5, Vernon will hold a Swiss steak dinner on Saturday, May 6 from 4-6:30 p.m. The menu will include Swiss steak, mashed potatoes with gravy, vegetables, beverages and homemade pies.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children 6-12 and free for ages 5 and younger. Take outs are available by calling 315-829-3535. The church is handicapped accessible. Ten percent of the proceeds will benefit a local mission.
Teddy Roosevelt, lumberjack
The Oneida Community Mansion House invites you on Sunday, May 7 for a discussion with historian Jason Newton about popular 19th century attitudes about work and masculinity. Newton examines Theodore Roosevelt’s early adult experiences in the Maine woods and at Harvard in a discussion of urban elites’ views of masculinity. Ideas about “ruggedness” shaped everything from immigration policy to imperialism, while rejecting what was considered feminine.
General admission to the program is $7 for adults and $3 for students with ID. Members of the Oneida Community Mansion House are admitted for no additional donation.
