Mayor’s health faces ‘major’ setbacks
ONEIDA, N.Y. >> According a Facebook post shared by city clerk Sue Pulverenti, Mayor Leo Matzke’s medical condition is facing ‘setbacks.’
“We truly appreciate all of the prayers that you are sending Leo Matzke,” his wife, Cheryl Ladd Matzke, wrote. “Today he faced some major setbacks but he continues to fight. Please continue to pray for him and send good thoughts. Please pass this on because prayer is powerful.”
Matzke was hospitalized late last week with an undisclosed medical issue.
Deputy Mayor Jim Chamberlain has been filling in for the time being.
“I would like Leo to come back Monday,” Chamberlain said when asked about filling in for Matzke. “I’m finding the job very interesting and challenging, and I enjoy it so far, but I don’t enjoy that I am doing it because Leo can’t.”
Chamberlain added that since filling in for the mayor, he has been working with department heads to make sure everything continues running properly.
“I have always believed department heads were hired for a reason,” Chamberlain said, express- ing his belief in the city’s department leaders. He added that he was happy to assist the city department heads if they wanted guidance but reiterated his belief in their ability.
WithMatzke out, Chamberlain says he is occupying the mayor’s desk at City Hall during normal business hours as Matzke did.
“I’min there every day. I plan to be there everyday and help out any way I can,” Chamberlain said. “My biggest concern is wishing Leo well andsending prayers his way.”
Despite the city of Oneida leader’s absence, Chamberlain says the city will continue to work with constituents and the Oneida Rail Trail as a parking compromise is sought.
“We are working very hard on the Rail Trail and parking issue. We’ve brought back some parking and are going to beworking on it a little bit more,” Chamberlain said.
