HCA pet food drive ends Monday Pet food drive
Holy Cross Academy’s National Honor Society is collecting pet food to help support Wanderers’ Rest Humane Association. Donations will be accepted through May 1 at the school, 4020 Barrington Road, Oneida Castle.
Lawday observance
The Madison County Bar Association will host its annual Law Day Luncheon on Monday, May 1 at noon at the Rusty Rail Restaurant in Canastota. Speaker will be Reginald Cox, founder of the Fatherhood Connection, and grants to community agencies will be awarded. The public is welcome.

Privacy workshops
Cazenovia Public Library will present two privacy protection workshops in celebration of the American Library Association’s (ALA) Choose Privacy Week. The programs will be held on Monday, May 1 at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. in the Community Room.
Choose Privacy Week is an annual ALA event that promotes the importance of individual privacy rights. Libraries across the country participate by hosting events and activities to raise awareness and engage library users on privacy issues. For information, visit chooseprivacyweek.org
The Library’s May 1 workshops — featuring an informational ALA video and group discussion — will help online users to adopt practices that counter surveillance and minimize unwanted data collection.
Happy birthday, Ella
The LeMoyne College Chamber Orchestra will join the nationwide Ella Fitzgerald Centennial celebration with a concert featuring her life and works on Monday, May 1 from 7:30-9 p.m. at LeMoyne College in Syracuse. Call (315) 445-4200. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors.
Junior book club
The Wild and Wonderful Readers junior book club will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, May 2 at 3:30 p.m. at the Cazenovia Public Library in the Story Garden Room. The session will combine book discussion, games, and hands-on creative activities.
The book club is open to children ages 9-12. Books are available at the circulation desk.
Canastota Public Library
The Canastota Public Library, located at 102 W. Center St. and the Canastota Central School District are holding their district-wide art show at the library again this year. The entire library will be “decked out” in art created by the talented students of the school district. Stop by any time the library is open to browse this eclectic collection.
Movies will be shown at the library every Tuesday beginning at 5 p.m. The May movies are as follows: May 2, “God’s Not Dead,” rated PG; May 9, “Saving Private Ryan,” rated R; May 16, “Trouble with the Curve,” rated PG-13; May 23, “A Man Called Ove,” rated PG-13; May 30, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” rated PG-13.
Beginning May 8 and through the entire week the Canastota Seed Exchange will be holding its Annual Seedling and Plant Exchange. Bring your tubers, plants, seedlings, divisions, plants or bulbs to exchange and/or share with others. Our Plant Exchange will be located near the main entrance of the library.
In celebration of the Erie Canal Bicentennial and to highlight a local historic site, Mike Allen, resident blacksmith, will present “Stories from the Landing: History of the Dry Docks at Chittenango” on Wednesday, May 10 at 7 p.m. Allen will explain the history of the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum, its rediscovery and restoration.
On Tuesday, May 23 at 7 p.m. the Canalside Talk will feature canal boat captain, Michele Henry. The dramatization illustrates a day in the life of a canal boat captain. The Canalside Talks are a collaboration between the Canal Town Museum and the library. A short question and answer period follows the presentation.
The Book Chat group has selected “The Rope” by Nevada Barr as its discussion book for the May meeting. Copies of the book are available now from the library.
The Book Chat will meet on Tuesday, May 30 at 1 p.m. in the Lawson Room on the second floor of the library. The Lunch & Lit Book Club meets on Wednesday, May 17 at 11:30 a.m. at The Raider. The selection for the month is “The Double Bind” by Chris Bohjalian. Both groups welcome new readers for discussion at every meeting.
The Night Time Knitters meet every Thursday at the library from 6:30-8 p.m. The Library Knitters meet Fridays at the library from 10 a.m. to noon. Both groups are interested in having knitters of all experience levels join them for knitting in the Lawson Community Room on the library’s lower level.
Free movie
The Sullivan Free Library’s Wednesday Movie Matinee for May 3 at 1 p.m. will be “Lion,” 2016, rated PG-13 and running 120 minutes. The drama, starring Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman, is about an Indian man who was lost as a child and sets out to find his family. Admission and popcorn are free.
Cazenovia Library
Cazenovia Public Library will present two free screenings of “Lion,” 2016 on Friday, May 5 at 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room.
Lion is based on the non-fiction book “A Long Way Home” by Saroo Brierley. The film tells the story of 5-year-old Saroo, who gets lost on the streets of Calcutta, thousands of miles from home. The young boy learns to survive on his own before an Australian couple discovers and adopts him. Twenty-five years later, Saroo embarks on a journey to find his lost family, equipped only with a few memories, his determination, and Google Earth technology. The movie, rated PG-13, runs 118 minutes. Free popcorn is provided. This is sponsored by The Friends of the Library.

Exhibitions at EOH
The Earlville Opera House is thrilled to announce the opening for three new exhibitions on Saturday, May 6 from 12-3 p.m. Artists Colleen O’Hara, Wendy Stanton and Bill McLaughlin offer individualistic and distinctly different perspective on landscape, and viewer’s relationship to environments both real and imagined.
All three exhibits will run through July 8. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 12-3 p.m. on Sat- urdays. Caz Cares workshop
CazCares and the Story Room — a Cazenovia Public Library outpost operating out of CazCares — will cosponsor the fourth installment of “Parenting: The Toughest Job You’ll Ever Love” on Monday, May 8 at 10 a.m. The event will be held at CazCares and presented by Sheila Clonan, Ph.D. and Kelli Johnson.
This session will focus on strategies for dealing with conflict.
Clonan is a licensed psychologist in private practice who works with children (preschool through college) to support their educational and personal development. She also partners with parents and teachers to facilitate the success of children of all abilities. Johnson is a NYS certified teacher with experience teaching students with reading disabilities and coaching teachers to meet the needs of struggling readers.

Garden club tomeet
The Chittenango Garden Club’s next meeting will feature “Everything You Want to Know about Mushrooms” with Owen Tallman on Tuesday, May 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the Sullivan Free Library, 101 Falls Blvd.

Live burn demo
The City of Oneida Fire Department will hold a live, side-by-side fire and sprinkler burn demonstration on May 11 at 10 a.m. at Otto Shortell Middle School, 200 Markell Drive, Wampsville. The demonstration is open to the public.
The demonstration will show the tremendous speed of a typical home fire and its potential for deadly destruction. It will also illustrate the importance of home fire safety technology that can save lives and reduce property damage (smoke alarms and home fire sprinkler systems).
Plant sale
The Chittenango Garden Club will hold its annual plant sale on Saturday, May 20 at Stickles Park from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Civil War Weekend
The 25th Annual Peterboro Civil War Weekend will be held Saturday, June 10 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, June 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
