Oneida returns to softbal semifinals
Lauren Skibitski went 3-for-3 with three doubles and three RBI for Oneida in Friday’s victory in the Section III Class B softball quarterfinals while teammate Brianna Laureti went 2-for3, also driving in three runs. Hannah Begay added two hits and Kay Curro also drove in two runs in the winning effort. Oneida advances to the semifinals where it will face Adirondack today at 3 p.m. at Onondaga Community College.

ONEIDA3, WATERTOWN IMMACULATE HEART CENTRAL 1 >> No. 8 seed Oneida jumped out to a 2-0 first-inning lead and tacked on a key insurance run in the fourth to knock out the No. 1 seed and move on to the Section III Class B semifinals. BROOKFIELD3, HAMILTON0>> Sam Campbell allowed just three hits over his six innings of work for the Emerald Knights on Friday but the Beavers converted them into three runs to knock Hamilton out of the Section III Class D playoffs.
FABIUS-POMPEY10, MADISON 2 >> The Blue Devils struck first with a run in the top of the first inning but surrendered six in the bottom of the frame and the Falcons rolled to victory from there. Madison’s Dawson Eckrich drove in one of his team’s two runs and struck out nine batters in four and two-thirds innings of relief. LAFARGEVILLE 16, STOCKBRIDGEVALLEY8>> The Cougars were knocked out of the Section III Class D playoffs in the quarterfinals.

SECTION III CLASS B1 CHAMPIONSHIPS >> Vernon-Verona-Sherrill took second as a team, getting firstplace finishes from Rose Pitman in the 800 (2:22.51) and Delaney Brewer in the 3000 (10:56.91). Julianna Cavanagh won two events for Oneida, taking first in the long jump (17-4.75) and triple jump (35-11.25). SECTION III CLASS B2 CHAMPIONSHIPS>> Devin Lee Robinson was the top competitor for Canastota, winning the 100 (13.24) and taking second in the triple jump (32-9).

Three VVS errors led to all four UND runs in the loss. CAMDEN 5, JAMESVILLE-DEWITT 4 >> The Blue Devils scored twice in the top of the seventh, taking the lead on a suicide squeeze bunt by Kaleb Ciani to post their third straight upset in the Section III Class A playoffs. SKANEATELES 12, CANASTOTA 0 >> The Raiders managed just two hits in the season-ending loss in the first round of the Section III Class B playoffs. WATERTOWN IMMACULATE HEART CENTRAL 7, CAZENOVIA 3 >> The Lakers were knocked out of the Section III Class B playoffs with a loss to the top seed despite a strong effort from starting pitcher Burke Regan, who took the loss but didn’t allow an earned run.

POLAND 25, MORRISVILLEEATON 0 (5 INNINGS) >> One day after scoring 16 runs the M-E bats fell silent in the loss to No. 1 seed Poland, who had a pair of 10run innings in the victory. ADIRONDACK 5, CANASTOTA 0>> Jade Shimer had two of the Raiders three hits in the loss in the first round of the Section III Class B playoffs. ONEIDA12, PULASKI3>> No. 2 seed Oneida earned a trip to the Section III Class B quarterfinals with Wednesday’s victory. LOWVILLE 4, CHITTENANGO 3 >> Trisha Whaley’s tworun home run helped give the Bears a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning but the hosts scored four in the bottomof the sixth to come back and win the firstround game in the Section III Class B playoffs. SOLVAY9, VERNON-VERONASHERRILL 0 >> Lauren Nichols struck out 18 in a perfect game for the No. 1 seed Bearcats, knocking the No. 16 seed Red Devils out of the Section III Class B tournament.

INTERCLASS TOURNAMENT >> Cazenovia’s Nate Romig fell in the singles final on Tuesday, losing 6-0, 6-1 to Fayetteville-Manlius’ Riley Ma. By reaching the final, Romig qualified for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships.

Other individual winners were Cazenovia teammates Alec Boone in the 100 (11.63) and James McPherson in the steeplechase (10:33.7), Chittenango’s Mike Capeling in the 1600 (4:32.73) and Oneida’s Jeffrey Coulter in the high jump (5-10). The Lakers 4X100 relay team of Boone, Elijah WellingtonHarper, Sean McPherson and James Pavelchak also took first, as did the Bears’ team of Phillip Abell, Dylan Price, Ersilio Cerminaro and Caleb Prenoveau in the 4X800 (8:27.69). SECTION III CLASS B2 CHAMPIONSHIPS>> Canastota took second as a team behind first-place finishes from Adam VanValkenburgh in the 800 (2:04.35) and Matt Stedman, Chris Cafarella, Erick Marsh and Ben Marshall in the 4X100 relay (46.42).
