Joseph W. Hammond Sr., 93, of Utica

UTICA >> Joseph W. Hammond Sr., age 93, died on Sunday, May 28, 2017.

He was born in Verona Station, N.Y., on Aug. 24, 1923, son of Albert and Aurelia Wells Hammond.

He attended Verona schools. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1942 to 1945, stationed in England with the 8th Army Air Force. On July 14, 1945, he married Marylee Mitchell of Kenwood, N.Y. at the Church of the Nazarene in Canastota, N.Y., a union of 70 years and 1 month, until the Lord called her home on Aug. 14, 2015.

He was employed at one time by Mastercraf­t in Oneida, and subsequent­ly for Oneida Ltd. for 35 years.

He was a member of the New Hartford, N.Y. American Legion Post 1376. He served as a Post Commander of Johnson-Rogers Post 1492, and a past Madison County Commander, County Finance Officer and Department of Sergeant-at-Arms.

He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Joseph Jr. and Cheryl Hammond of Leonardsvi­lle, N.Y.; and five daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and David Vest of Raeford, N.C., Bonnie and Rev. Richard Devendorf of Longview, Texas, Judith and Wayne Inglis Sr. of Clayville, N.Y., Jacquelyn and Leonard Montana of New Hartford, N.Y., and Maureen and Dale Minckler of Utica, N.Y., with whom he resided for the last month of his life. Also surviving are 14 grandchild­ren and 21 greatgrand­children.

He is also survived by one sister, Matie Rowe of Canastota, N.Y.; two brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law, Richard and Carol Pieper of Sher- rill, N.Y. and Edward Dostie of Englewood, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. He was predecease­d by his parents, three brothers, Raymond, William, and Fred, and six sisters, Alice Bowman, Christina Seaman, Anna Mae Collins, Alberta Collins, Eunice Shepard, and Barbara Piersall.

The family would like to thank his good friend and Pastor Rev. James Brewer and also to Jan Elliott from Hospice for their acts of kindness.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, June 2, 2017 from the Campbell-Dean Funeral Home, Inc., 260 Main St., Oneida, with the Rev. James Brewer officiatin­g. Interment will be made in Crown Hill Memorial Park, where full military honors will be accorded to Mr. Hammond.
