Parenting workshop

CazCares and the Story Room — a Cazenovia Public Library outpost operating out of CazCares — will co-sponsor the sixth installmen­t of “Parenting — The Toughest Job You’ll Ever Love” on Monday, June 5 at 10 a.m. The event will be held at CazCares and presented by Dr. Sheila Clonan and Kelli Johnson. This session will provide tips for building a parental support network.

This workshop is made possible through the support of a Common Grounds Challenge Grant. Previous attendance is not required. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshmen­ts and childcare will be provided. Contact Carla at 315559-7591 to reserve a spot.

Happening this week at the Oneida Public Library, 220 Broad St. will be:

Wednesday, June 7 at 2 p.m., Yoga for Seniors. Bill Skinner, a certified Hatha yoga instructor, returns to the OPL to conduct a weekly class for seniors in yoga postures and exercises adapted for their individual abilities. The class, which is free of charge, meets in June on Wednesdays from 2-3 p.m.

Wednesday, June 7 at 3:30 p.m. Teen Tech Time. Middle and high school teens can take time out to dabble at coding, circuitry and computer games. Materials and links are provided.

Thursday, June 8 at 7 p.m. Dr. Roxanna Pisiak will reveal the warming factions among Upstate New Yorkers in the 19th century over women’s rights.

Saturday, June 10 at 11 a.m. Family Super Saturday: Red Cross to the Rescue. Families with children ages 2-9 are invited to join OPL’s Megan Gillander in welcoming representa­tives from the American Red Cross who will tell of their work and ways young people can help too.

Roxanna Pisiak at OPL

It took women’s rights advocates more than 75 years to convince the New York State Legislatur­e to grant women the right to vote in 1917. Dr. Roxanna Pisiak, professor of humanities at Morrisvill­e State College, will explain why in her contributi­on to the state’s Women’s Suffrage Centennial Celebratio­n, a lecture on “The 19th Century Upstate Response to Women’s Suffrage” at Oneida Public Library on Thursday, June 8 at 7 p.m.

Based on her original re- search into the 19th century Upstate press and the writings of the region’s leading politician­s, clerics and intellectu­als, Pisiak will reveal the hostility, ridicule and societal hurdles that Upstate suffragett­es like Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Elizabeth Smith Miller and Matilda Joslyn Gage faced when they publicly advocated for the vote. Not least among their adversarie­s were educated women shocked by calls for women’s equality with men.

Pisiak has been teaching humanities courses at Morrisvill­e for more than 20 years. Her special areas of study include American literature and culture, film and visual communicat­ion. She received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2009 and the Morrisvill­e Distinguis­hed Faculty Award in 2005.

As lecturer and commentato­r, Pisiak has appeared before at the OPL in “Children at Work: Tales of Madison County Childhood” in March 2006 and in “Scott and Zelda: Genius, Love and Madness in the Jazz Age” in February 2003.

Pisiak’s appearance at the OPL is made possible by an Action Grant from Humanities New York as part of the OPL’s 2017 Centennial Celebratio­n of Women’s Suffrage in New York State. The Canastota Municipal Pool is scheduled to open for the season on Saturday, June 10.

Swim lesson registrati­on will be held on Saturday, June 17 from 1-6 p.m. for residents and Sunday, June 18 from 1-6 p.m. for residents and non-residents.

Path Through History

As part of New York State’s Path Through History Weekend, Oneida Community Mansion House invites families to explore the Mansion House, indoors and out, with special guided tours on Saturday, June 17 at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. Family groups will experience the lifestyle of the utopian community in their authentic settings, sitting rooms, bedrooms, cabinet of curiositie­s, library and meeting hall. Families are also invited to play a round of the Oneida Community’s favorite game — croquet!

Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students and children 12 and younger.

The house is open for visitors Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon until 5 p.m. Guided tours are provided (with admission) Wednesday through Saturday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.

Earlville musical

The Earlville Opera House will recognize talented artists in the community with a special local Music Showcase on June 17 at 7 p.m. While known for bringing in iconic touring musicians, they are thrilled to host his “variety show” style fundraiser highlighti­ng the outstandin­g performers in your midst, including Rabbit in the Rye, Bandits on the Run, Lauren Mettler, the Hamilton Ramblers and more.

The event will serve as a fundraiser for the historic Earlville Opera House. Community events like this one allow the EOH to continue bringing world class performanc­es and art installati­ons to Central New York and facilitate­s the art education workshops and classes hosted for adults and children of all ages.

The show begins June 17 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 general, $10 members and $5 for students. Mansion House Presentati­on

Join Tamar Carroll, historian and author, and Mansion House curator Molly Jessup in a discussion about the coalition of AIDS and women’s health activists in New York City during the late 1980s on Sunday, June 18 at 1 p.m. at Oneida Community Mansion House,. In the face of official silence and avoidance, members of the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP New York) and of the Women’s Health Action Mobilizati­on (WHAM!) joined together to advocate awareness and a public health response to the HIV epidemic and for the right to health care. Carroll’s extensive interviews with some of those activists formed the basis for her book, “Mobilizing New York: AIDS, Antipovert­y, and Feminist Activism.”

General admission to the program is $7 for adults and $3 for students with ID. (Members of the Oneida Community Mansion House are admitted for no additional donation.)

The Oneida Community Mansion House was the residence of the 19th century utopian Oneida Community (1848 - 1880), which itself advocated equality among, sexual autonomy, and healthful living for men and women. OCMH preserves, collects and interprets material culture, intangible heritage, and five historic buildings, situated on 33 acres of landscaped lawns and gardens. OCMH is a National Historic Landmark and chartered by the New York State Department of Education.
