Nine advance to state track championships
Athletes from Oneida, Vernon-Verona-Sherrill, Canastota, Cazenovia and Morrisville-Eaton will compete at next weekend’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships.

FIER » Canastota’s Adam VanValkenburgh was one of several Dispatch-area athletes to qualify for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association boys track and field championships, running the 800 in 1:57.44 in Friday’s qualifier at Cicero-North Syracuse. Also qualifying for the state meet were Morrisville-Eaton’s Dale Lake, who cleared the bar in the pole vault at 13-9, VernonVerona- Sherrill’s Logan Wendt in the shot put (499.75) and Cazenovia’s 4X100 relay team of Alec Boone, Elijah Wellington-Harper, Sean McPherson and James Pavelchak (45.06). The Lakers will also be represented in the girls state championship by Chloe Smith, who broke the school record with a long jump of 17- 6.5 to qualify. Oneida’s Julianna Cavanagh qualified as well with a distance of 36-11.25 in the triple jump.

POST 1 » Sherrill Post used a seven-run second inning to power its way to a season-opening victory, highlighted by two-run singles from Dylan Shlotzhauer and Andrew Roden. Anthony Farina struck out seven over four innings to earn the win on the mound.

SPARTANS 2 » Joshua Goldstein reached on an error and scored the go-ahead run for the Silversmiths in the top of the fifth and Craig Sandford and Tully Allen added insurance runs with RBI singles in the top of the sixth to help Sherrill start its season with a victory.
