Making Father’s Day extra special

- Carol Weimer

Carol Weimer of Canastota Corner shares her thoughts and tips for making this Father’s Day memorable.

This column might be a little premature, but it’s for all you fathers.

Some are honored each year by their children, while others protest being fussed over. There are presents to open, you HAVE to put on dressup clothes to go out to eat (they won’t take “no” for an answer) or some other act that says they love you. Now here is the chance for you to do what is meant for all fathers that day: do what you want as long as you have to.

Why not plan a day on your own? Tell them in advance or spring it on them the week before that as long as that day has to be observed, you are going to plan the day and all of your children will have to conform to your wishes.

If you are golfers then plan a day of going out on the course as a team. If you don’t have enough, then recruit someone you know who might not have a father and they can fill in. There is always fishing if not golf. You can get all of the equipment needed for everyone so you won’t have those who say they don’t have the equipment. If you know of a special place where the fish are biting, go there. It might not be Oneida Lake but some little waterway they have never been and more private than a large fishing spot. Bowling is also an idea. Many don’t think of bowling in the summer time but there are leagues some places all year round.

Maybe you don’t wish to leave home. Why not plan a huge barbecue with just you and your children and spouses and really plan food such as filet mignon, lobster or special foods the kids all like and also what YOU like. As a special surprise, a cake with a special Father’s Day greeting that will top off the occasion. If that doesn’t get them all then what will? You have read all of this and maybe you think to yourself that is too much work for my day. If that is the case, maybe you only have one child and that is too much planning for one. Then how about a scenic road trip just around the place where you live or nearby community where there are parks, scenic places to visit or a celebration going on that you can take in. If you don’t mind and they don’t either, let it just be an ordinary day for a walk on one of the trails open this year. Or there might be a special movie, play, guest appearance of a favorite of yours appearing at one of the casinos, not on Father’s Day but soon and you can obtain tickets for all of you to go.

There is a solution for something other than the normal for your day and what you might enjoy. It’s in plenty of time for you to make the arrangements either by phone or computer and just what you will do. Don’t say I haven’t helped for you with thanks or no thanks.
