Joseph J. Sansone, 89, of Oneida
ONEIDA » Joseph J. Sansone, 89, formerly of 3881 Prospect St., passed away on Wednesday, June 28, 2017, at the Presbyterian Home in New Hartford, where he had been a resident since May 2015.
He was born on Feb. 7, 1928, in Oswego, the son of Joseph and Theresa Mondello Sansone. He was a graduate of Oswego High School, Class of 1948.
Joe proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army serving overseas and was honorably discharged as a Technician Fifth Grade on Nov. 28, 1947.
On Nov. 20, 1954, Joe was united in marriage to Patricia O’Connell. She passed away on June 11, 2011. They moved to Oneida in 1959.
Joe was employed as a letter carrier for the United States Parcel Service in Oneida for 30 years, retiring in 1985. He also worked as a bartender at the former family restaurant, the Shady Grill in Vernon.
He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, where he served as a lector, eucharistic minister, an usher, and on the funeral team. He was also a member of the E. Bart Hanifin Knights of Columbus Council 473 in Oneida.
Joe was a great carpenter, woodworker, and avid gardener. He also enjoyed golfing.
Surviving are a daugh- ter, Julie Downs and her companion, Vernon Downs, of Oneida; a son, Daniel J. (Mikaele) Sansone, of Charleston, S.C.; six grandchildren, Michelle (Daniel) Gray of Canajoharie, Michael (Jamie) Downs of Troy, Matthew (Jessica) Downs of Bridgeport, Maria (David) Murdie of Chittenango, James Sansone and Robert Sansone, both of Syracuse; four great-grandchildren, Kayla Church, USAF, stationed in Italy, Jacob Church, Kate Downs, and Leo Downs; and a nephew, Anthony Sansone, of Oswego. Joe was predeceased by four brothers, Thomas, Samuel, Anthony, and Santo.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 3, 2017, beginning with a 9:15 a.m. prayer service at the Ironside Funeral Home, Inc., followed by his funeral Mass at St. Joseph’s Church, 121 St. Joseph’s Place, Oneida, at 10 a.m., where the Rev. Richard J. Kapral will officiate. Interment with military honors will take place in St. Helena’s Cemetery. Family and friends are invited and may call on Sunday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home, 342 Main St., Oneida. Memorial contributions may be made in Joe’s memory to St. Joseph’s Church Memorial Fund, 121 St. Joseph’s Place, Oneida, N.Y., 13421.
