Paddlefest 2 in Chittenango
PaddleFest today
PaddleFest 2 is being held Aug. 13 from noon to 5 p.m. at the Stone Marina in Bridgeport together with a Swap & Music Festival. Come celebrate Chittenango Creek with us at the family friendly event.
Among the things planned are live music with two great bands, Master Thieves and Bradshaw Blues Band. Also kayak and paddle board demos with discounted kayak rentals; the opportunity to swap or trade your kayak; several door prizes and raffles including a new Total Kayak Package; and a bounce house for the kids. Food will be available for purchase.
Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Kids younger than 12 are free with adult admission.
Oneida Library
A free movie matinee, “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul” will be shown at the Oneida Public Library at noon on Monday, Aug. 14.
On Tuesday, Aug. 15 at 4:30 p.m. OPL’s Youth Services Coordinator Megan Gillander takes to the road to regale youngsters at the Cottage Lawn Farmers Market with stories and crafts.
This week’s concerts
Here is this week’s lineup of summer concerts in area parks.
In the Reilly-Mumford Memorial Park in Sherrill, the Party Nuts will perform on Tuesday, Aug. 15 beginning at 6:30 p.m. followed by a free movie at dusk. It’s always fun when the Party Nuts come to town with a family evening of golden oldies rock n’ roll sing alongs that encourage audience participation. After the concert, stay to watch the movie “Trolls” under the stars in the park.
In Chittenango at the Dr. West Park on Tuesday, Aug. 15, Matt Chase and Thunder Canyon will entertain you from 6-8 p.m. The Chittenango Rotary Chuck Wagon will supply you with refreshments. Concerts will continue through Sept. 26.
At the Sylvan Beach bandstand on Wednesday, Aug. 16 from 7-9 p.m. will be the Fulton Chain Gang.
The final concert in the pavilion of the Canastota International Boxing Hall of Fame will feature Fab Cats on Thursday, Aug. 17 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The group provides a rock n’ roll party experience that features the spirit of the ‘60s, from the British Invasion to the Motor City to the West Coast. Rain date is Thursday, Aug. 24.

Free movies
At the Sullivan Free Library in Chittenango the Wednesday 1 p.m. matinee on Aug. 16 is “This Beautiful Fantastic,” 2017, rated PG and running 110 minutes. The heartwarming story about a reclusive young woman who finds a friend features Jessica Brown Findlay, Tom Wilkinson and Andrew Scott.
The movie to be shown at Cazenovia Public Library on Wednesday, Aug. 18 at 1 and 6:30 p.m. is “Guardians of the Galaxy,” 2014, rated PG-13 and running 121 minutes. A group of intergalactic criminals must work together to stop a villain from taking over the universe. The fast-paced superhero film is based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name.
Morrisville Library
The Morrisville Public Library will present the following events during August:
All children who complete the 10 hour reading requirement are invited to the Summer Reading graduation ceremony on Wednesday, Aug. 16 at 6:30 p.m.
All ages are invited to learn to play Mahjong on Monday, Aug. 21 and 28 from 1-3 p.m.
Family Movie Night will be held Friday, Aug. 25 at 7 p.m. featuring “Boss Baby,” rated PG.
Solar eclipse events
This summer the Cazenovia Public Library will celebrate the Aug. 21 solar eclipse with two family friendly programs.
A New Observer’s Guide to the Solar Eclipse will be held Wednesday, Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room. Join local amateur astronomer Damian Allis of Central New York Observers & Observing (CNYO) to discover how a solar eclipse occurs and what to expect in the sky this August.
CNYO is a Syracusebased organization that aims to promote amateur astronomy, space science, and other science activities through lectures, observing sessions, and other forms of public outreach.
Solar Eclipse Viewing Party takes place Monday, Aug. 21 at 2 p.m. in the Community Room and on the library lawn.
Join us for a festive celebration of the solar eclipse. We will enjoy crafts and hands-on activities inside the library before heading outside to view the phenomenon through special glasses. Solar viewers will be provided through a STARNet Libraries Education Outreach Community Program.

At the Kallet
The Kallet Civic Center Griffing Gallery will be displaying the water- color work of Ann Pangburn during the month of August. The gallery is located in the lobby of the Civic Center at 159 Main St. in downtown Oneida and is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
For the past five years Pangburn as been devoting herself to developing as a watercolor artist by continuous learning. She studied briefly at Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute and also took classes with local instructors Catherine Bennett and Linda Evans. She has read extensively on composition, color theory, drawing and technique. Her memberships in the Sherrill Art Council and the Cazenovia Watercolor Society have been a great source of inspiration and education. She recently attended a workshop with internationally acclaimed watercolorist Lian Quain Zhen and will be participating in the upcoming Plein Art Event at the View in Old Forge. Pangburn has painted several commissions for large abstract and portraits, along with leading Paint and Praise events for local churches.
The public is cordially invited to a reception for the artist in the Griffing Gallery on Thursday, Aug. 17 from 6-8 p.m.
Hartwood Farm tour
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Madison County will hold a tour of Hartwood Farm, 5258 Irish Ridge Road, Chittenango on Thursday, Aug. 17 at 4:30 p.m.
The tour will include discussion about adapting to and minimizing the effects of extreme weather. Participants will learn about the practices that Hartwood Farm has implemented to be successful under challenging growing conditions, including the planning tools that they use as well as the practical efforts made to minimize the impacts of extreme weather on their farm.
Allison Chatrchyan and Danielle Eiseman from the Cornell Institute of Climate Smart Solutions, Climate Smart Farming Program will present some of the new tools available for farmers to use to better prepare for extreme weather events. Puppy Paddle returns
Looking for a fun day of swimming and socialization for your dog in an enclosed area? Then bring your pooch to the Howard T. Chapman Pool in Oneida for the CNY Puppy Paddle on Saturday, Aug. 19 from 1-3 p.m.
VCA Oneida Animal Hospital, Madison County 4H and the City of Oneida Parks and Recreation staff will be on hand for the event, which began originally as a fundraiser for a dog park in the city. The will also unveil a new pet food pantry to help local families provide nutrition for their four legged members.

Fair bus trip
The cities of Oneida and Sherrill and the Village of Canastota are sponsoring a bus trip to the New York State Fair for seniors on Tuesday, Aug. 29. The bus will leave Oneida Towers at 9 a.m. with a stop at the Canastota Pool, and leave the fair at 6 p.m. The bus fee is $10. Seniors 60 and older will be admitted free to the fair.
