Farmers market update

Summer is almost over but the farmers markets in most of the county will remain open through September and October. They are: Hamilton, Oct. 28; Cazenovia Farmers Market, Oct. 28; Farmers & Artisan Market at Eclectic Chic, Sept. 11; There’s No Place Like Home Grown Farmers Market, Chittenang­o, Oct. 26; Peterboro Farmers Market, Sept. 15; 20/ East Night Market, 4157 Midstate Lane, Cazenovia, Aug. 30; Canastota Towpath Farmers Market, Sept. 28; Farmers Market at Cottage Lawn, Oneida, Sept. 5; Fayettevil­le Farmers Market, Fayettevil­le Towne Center, Oct. 16.

Loaves & Fishes

The monthly Loaves & Fishes luncheons held at the United Methodist Church and sponsored by the Canastota Associatio­n of Churches will be held Aug. 28 through Sept. 1. Serving will be in the Fellowship Hall downstairs from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Come and enjoy a free hot dinner and received a bag meal for your supper.

Summer concerts

It’s the last week of August and the concerts that were free for the summer are almost gone. Chittenang­o will have concerts through the month of

concerts through the month of September and we will report them to you, but this is the last week for Sherrill and all of the others ended last week.

In Dr. West Park on Tuesday, Aug. 29 the Rotary Club will have a concert but the band is to be announced. They will play from 6-8 p.m. and the Rotary Chuck Wagon will be on hand with food to purchase.

In the gazebo at Reilly-Mumford Park in Sherrill, Gary Johnson will be playing for your listening pleasure on Tuesday, Aug. 29 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Johnson is a one-man band whose show is driven by his magnetic personalit­y and ability to engage a wide range of audiences. He performs all types of music and we’re looking forward to welcoming him to Sherrill as the final performanc­e of the 2017 season.

Kid’s Day

The theme for the Cottage Lawn Farmers Market at the Madison County Historical Society on Tuesday, Aug. 29 will be Kid’s Day 2.0. It’s open from 3-7 p.m.

Japanese quilt display

The Hamilton Public Library presents “For the Love of Children,” a Japanese quilt show created by the Hanatsunga­i-Kai (Flower) Quilt Club. The community is invited to join a presentati­on with Miwako Kimura, director of the Quilt Club, followed by a reception hosted by the Friends of the Library on Aug. 29 from 5- 6:30 p.m. The exhibit will be on display through Sept. 4.

Brindisi visits Hamilton

NYS Assemblyma­n Anthony Brindisi will be in Hamilton on Wednesday, Aug. 30 to introduce himself to voters at a meeting of the citizen group MadisonChe­nango Call to Action. The meeting, which starts at 7 p.m. at the Colgate Inn in the Parlor, is open to the public. After the speaker, everyone is welcome to stay for an update on MC CTA activities and a strategy session. Brindisi is challengin­g U.S. Congresswo­man Claudia Tenney in the 2018 race for New York’s 22nd District.

Free movie

Sullivan Free Library in Chittenang­o will be showing the movie “Tommy’s Honour,” 2017, rated PG, running 100 minutes on Wednesday, Aug. 30 at 1 p.m. The bio-drama about golf and class struggle in Scotland stars Peter Mullen and Jack Lowdon.

Farmers market coupons

Farmers Market Coupons for seniors ages 60 and older are available through Sept. 1 at Madison County Office for the Aging, 138 Dominic Bruno Blvd., weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The free coupon books, worth $20, are given to income- eligible seniors in Madison County to buy fresh fruits and vegetables at any participat­ing farmers market. Hamilton Library

Friends of the Hamilton Library are hosting their annual book sale on Friday, Sept. 1 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 2 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is a great opportunit­y to find new-to-you fiction and non-fiction for adults, books for children and teens and a few movies and music too! We are very appreciati­ve of your support and generosity and look forward to seeing you at the book sale.

Visit the Fair

The 2017 Great New York State Fair is now open and running for 13 days (an increase from 12 days) to celebrate New York’s food, farms and people. It’s running through Sept. 4.

Enjoy great carnival rides on the Midway, chow down on an incredible variety of foods, shop the Center of Progress or the Horticultu­ral Building for exciting new products, wander through the Art & Home Center to see competitio­ns in art, sewing, quilting and more. There is so much to do on these 375 acres of excitement. Major musical acts will be performing as well as great local and regional performers. Stop into the Taste of New York to enjoy some of the finest foods and beverages that New York State has to offer.

Check out a horse competitio­n in the Coliseum and don’t forget the array of animals to visit with goats, llamas, chickens, cows, pigs, ducks and so many more. And don’t forget the new Iroquois Indian Village.

Annual Mum Sale

Oneida Improvemen­t Committee’s 6th Annual Mum Sale is going on through Sept. 5. Potted mums are available in red, yellow, purple, and orange.

The cost is $15 for one; $20 for two and $25 for three. Orders can be mailed to OIC, P.O. Box 55, Oneida, N.Y. or dropped off at the Oneida Rec Center, 217 Cedar St. Cash or checks payable to OIC are accepted. Pick up will be Thursday, Sept. 7 at the Oneida Rec Center. Movie after dark

Come and enjoy a Movie Under the Stars for all ages on Friday, Sept. 8 in Sullivan Park, Chittenang­o. The movie will start shortly after sunset (7:30 p.m.). Bring a blanket, some chairs and bug spray. Food will be available for purchase.

The event is free and open to everybody. Please bring a canned food item for the Sullivan Food Pantry.

Morrisvill­e Library

Morrisvill­e Public Library has scheduled the following September events:

Teen/Adult Movie Night with “Everything, Everything” on Friday Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. Children younger than 13 must be accompanie­d by a parent/guardian.

All ages can learn to play Mahjong on Mondays, Sept. 11, 18 and 25 from 1-3 p.m.

Sherrill Library

The Friends of the Sherrill Kenwood Library will host their second annual Used Book Sale at the Community Activity Center, 139 E. Hamilton Ave. on Friday, Sept. 8 from 4-8 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 9 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Drop off dates of materials at the CAC are Thursday, Sept. 7 from 3-7 p.m. and Friday, Sept. 8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Donations are not accepted at the library. The Friends cannot accept magazines, text books, encycloped­ias or Readers Digest Condensed Books.

Adult Education Course

The Alexander Hamilton Institute will offer the adult education course, “Abraham Lincoln: Leader and Legend” on Mondays Sept. 11 through Dec. 11 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at AHI headquarte­rs, 21 W. Learn to Dance

Learn with others in a relaxed environmen­t while having a fun evening out. Six weekly sessions will be split up between learning the fundamenta­ls of the Cha Cha and the East Cost Swing.

Madison County Hop Fest

Madison County Historical Society will present the annual Madison County Hop Fest events Sept. 15-17.

The Hop Fest will be held Sept. 16 from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Historical Society, 435 Main St. in Oneida. The Taste of Hops: A Food and Beer Pairing will take place from 12-2 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. The Craft Beer Sampling will be held from 2:30-5:30 p.m. Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 the day of the event.

Other weekend events include the Paired Beer Dinner at Good Nature Farm Brewery on Sept. 15 at 6 p.m. The cost is $65 per person. Reservatio­ns are required by Sept. 8. The Hop Heritage Tour will take place Sept. 17 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a motor coach tour of hop houses and craft breweries. The cost is $30 per person; reservatio­ns are due Sept. 8.

Falling Leaves Race

The 42nd Annual Falling Leaves Road Race will be held Sunday, Sept. 24 starting at the Radisson Hotel in Utica. Sherrill shredding event

The City of Sherrill Shredding & Plastic Collection will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Sept. 30 at the Transfer Station, 210 Elmwood Place, Sherrill.

Sherrill residents are invited to bring any paper they need shredded to the Transfer Station for this free event. No need to remove paper clips or staples. Folders and envelopes are okay too.

Sherrill residents are also invited to drop off bulky rigid plastics including: plastic beverage crates (milk, soda, etc.), clean plastic drums, totes and empty garbage cans of all sizes, plastic buckets/pails of all sizes, plastic toys (playhouses, etc.), plastic tool and gun cases, plastic plant trays and flower pots, plastic pallets and shelving, laundry baskets, plastic lawn furniture, plastic pet carriers, cat litter containers, plastic recycling bins and carts, and large plastic water jugs.

Items not accepted: plastic bags, stretch film, Styrofoam, plastic appliances, vinyl siding, water hoses, toys with circuit boards or battery packs, pool/chemical containers, driveway sealant containers, paint cans and motor oil containers.
