Women’s History Weekend reservations

-

Come celebrate women’s history in Peterboro with marmalade, bloomers and baseball.

PETERBORO » Reservations for the Peterboro Women’s History Weekend are due Sept. 15.

Package reservations for programs and meals on Saturday are $67, reservations for programs and meals on Sunday are $35, and reservations for the entire weekend are $85. Individual programs are $5 payable at the door.

The public is encouraged to attend all or parts of the weekend – and to wear 19th century bloomer costumes or suffragette outfits.

Orange marmalade, inspired by a recipe in Elizabeth Smith Miller’s 1875 cookbook, will debut at the Peterboro Women’s History Weekend Sept. 22-24. In recognition of Miller’s several marmalade recipes, and her sales of marmalade to raise money for the education of young women, Nelson Farms responded to the NYS Centennial of Women’s Suffrage event with a zesty marmalade that will be packaged and for sale, and sample, during the weekend.

Marmalade represents one of the spheres in the life of Miller, whose ballot activities (largest political equality club in New York State) and bloomer reform (adoption of a healthier trouser costume) are two other spheres which will be explored during the weekend event.

The Peterboro Deli on the Green will serve three heritage meals during the weekend with menus inspired by the 1300 recipes in Miller’s “In the Kitchen” cookbook. The Bloomer Tea, with finger foods, tea sandwiches, and beverages, will be served at noon on Saturday, Sept. 23 by the Bloomer Brigade dressed in reproductions of bloomers made by Jody Luce. At 5 p.m. a Suffrage Supper will be served by Smithfield Community Youth in suffragist outfits.

On Sunday, Sept. 24, the CommUNITY Read of “Invention of Wings” will be launched at a luncheon, again, with foods inspired by Miller’s cookbook. Sue Monk Kidd’s popular book about Hetty and her owner Sarah Grimké will be read and discussed in participating libraries in Madison and Oneida counties for one month. The culmination of the CommUNITY Read will be Sunday, Oct. 22 with keynote speaker Louise Knight, a researcher and writer on Sarah and Angelina Grimké.

Registration for the Peterboro Women’s History event is at the Smithfield Community Center, 5255 Pleasant Valley Road.

“The Game of Life: The Great Peterboro Baseball Story” at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 21 and “The Rest of The Story of the Suffrage Movement,” a Humanities New York Public Scholars program presented by Sally Roesch Wagner, Ph.D., at 1:30 on Sunday, Sept. 24 are free.
