Lynda M. Gates, 65, of Cocoa Beach, Fla.

COCOA BEACH, FLA. » Lynda Marie Gates, 65, South Atlantic Avenue, formerly of Durhamville, died Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 26, 2017, in Sentara Hospice House, Virginia Beach, Va., following an extended illness of several months.

Born in Rome, on May 5, 1952, she was a daughter of Edward “Ted” and Dolores Pole Newman. A resident of Durhamville for 20 years, relocating to Florida, Lynda was a graduate of Oneida High School and later attended college. She married Robert T. Gates, in Durhamville, on Aug. 19, 1972.

Lynda was self-employed as a Quality System Auditor. When she resided in the Durhamville area, she was a communicant of St. Francis Church, was very active in the Durhamville School PTO and coached girls’ softball.

Surviving besides her husband, Robert, are her daughter, Melanie Penny Gates of Rockledge, Fla.; her son, Jason E. Gates of Denver, Colo.; her two sisters, Susan (Paul) Wickham of Virginia Beach, Va. and Denise Skinner of Oneida; her brother, Douglas Newman of Durhamville; her four grandchildren, Katlyn, Mary, Lily and Robert; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Mary Roache and a brother, Curtis Newman.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday from the Campbell-Dean Funeral Home, Inc., 260 Main St., Oneida, with the Rev. William Mesmer, officiating. Interment will be made in West Verona Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home, 1-5 p.m., Sunday. Contributions, in her memory, may be made to the Durhamville School Log Cabin Fund, 5642 Main St., Durhamville, N.Y. 13054.
