NEW HARTFORD » The Utica and Mohawk Valley Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society will meet Friday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, corner of French and Burrstone roads. Following a business meeting, President Harry Lenz will present a DVD on the history of the Delaware and Hudson’s Laurentian that ran from Montreal to New York. The public is invited to attend.
WetlandWalk offered Oct. 14
CANASTOTA » Great Swamp Conservancy, Inc. will hold a wetland walk on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 1 p.m. at the GSC, 8375 N. Main St. Participants will take a guided trail walk through a wetland habitat, learning to identify native plants and wildlife along the way. This event will be held rain or shine. Craft showset for Oct. 21
VERONA » Verona Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary will hold its Fall Craft Show and Raffle on Saturday, Oct. 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Verona Fire Department, Volunteer Avenue. The event will feature crafts, vendors, homemade pies and a large raffle. Lunch will be available.

Utica Roadrunners plan Thanksgiving race
UTICA » The Utica Roadrunners will hold the 23rd annual run and walk to end hunger on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 23. Race day registration only will be at the Utica Parkway Gymnasium, 220 Memorial Parkway from 8-8:45 a.m. Free for the 5K run and 2 mile walk are $7 per person or $20 per family donation plus two nonperishable items. Donations will benefit the Compassion Coalition and local food pantries. Donations can be sent to Utica Roadrunners, P.O. Box 4141, Utica, N.Y. 13504.
Garden clubmeeting Oct. 3
SHERRILL » The Sherrill Garden Club will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 3 at the Sherrill-Kenwood Library at 7 p.m. to make Christmas ornaments to decorate the library’s Christmas tree in December. A financial aid representative from Tompkins Cortland Community College will be giving information and updates pertaining to the financial aid process. Scarecrow contest begins Oct. 3
ONEIDA » The second annual Scarecrow Contest for the City of Oneida will take place from Oct. 3-17. City residents can register their displays by emailing their name, address and phone number to shaynes@oneidacity.com or by calling the City Clerk at (315) 3637378. Groups, businesses, and homes are invited to participate. Judging will take place Oct. 17-19, with winners announced on Oct. 20. Three categories will be judged: Most Traditional, Best Theme, and Mayor’s Choice. There will be a first place winner for $50 and second place winner for $25 in each category. SHERRILL » The Sherrill Kenwood Free Library will present “Winning Women’s Suffrage in New York 1917,” a lecture by Kristi Andersen on Tuesday, Oct. 3 at 4 p.m. The event is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of the Greater Oneida Area in celebration of the centennial of the women’s right to vote in New York State. Anderson, professor emeritus of political science at Syracuse University, is a panelist on WCNY’s “Ivory Tower,” a weekly round table discussion focusing on news and events of Central New York.

Court St. Public Health Law requires all dogs, cats, and ferrets to be vaccinated by 4 months of age. Vaccinations are available free of charge to Madison County residents. A $5 donation is requested to help defray clinic costs. All animals must be at least 3 months of age and be properly restrained.

Mansion House program offered Oct. 7
ONEIDA » Oneida Community Mansion House will present “Welcome to Silver City: Industry, Then and Now” on Saturday, Oct. 7 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The program starts at the Mansion House, 170 Kenwood Ave., where participants will discover the industrial history of the Utopian Oneida Community by viewing objects that were used and produced in the Community’s factory (built in 1863). Then participants will tour the historic factory to see Sherrill Manufacturing’s Liberty Tabletop, the only domestic manufacturer of silverware.
