Vote for Milman-Barris
I have enjoyed representing the people of Oneida Wards 1, 2, and 3 for the past several months at the Madison County Board of Supervisors. I hope you will vote for me in November so I can continue this work. Public service is important to me because throughout my childhood, my own parents volunteered with county agencies helping children, and I grew up knowing deeply the importance of county functions in people’s lives. The county not only gives us bridges and roads to drive on and a place to dispose of our waste, but also courts to serve justice, aid for our neighbors in need, and protection for our children.
I have the professional experience to handle county business. I am a Cornell-educated geologist with a career in environmental investigations and cleanups, working on contracts for the Federal government and private companies. I have experience managing projects, budgets, tasks, and people. I also have experience listening to clients to understand their needs, and mobilizing a team to get the job done.
I am fortunate to have lived in several places in the coun- try, as I have moved for educational or job opportunities. In each place, I’ve learned something new and experienced being a part of a different community. Each community has had different economic concerns, cultural perspectives, and habits of governance. My husband and I wanted to move to central New York, where we have relatives, and relocated our family to Oneida in January 2012. Although we have lived here a relatively short time, we find ourselves having put down many roots and feel that it is home. Our third and youngest child was born here and just started kindergarten. I am proud to have found this hometown for us.
I am dedicated to the community where I live and work. I have been on the board of directors of Celebration Children’s Center in Canastota since 2012, including a year as president in 2016. I served on the City of Oneida Climate Action Plan Committee 2014-2016, and am on the Oneida City Democratic Committee and the Madison County Democratic Committee. I am not highly partisan, but I do believe that parties provide a good structure for people who hold similar values to support each other through the political process. I know that Oneidans can work together in government regardless of political party. I am proud also to be endorsed this fall by the Working Families Party. In my political work, I have been striving to increase the voice of women, who are grossly underrepresented in local government.
I believe I have the character, professional and service experience, and dedication to the community that the Supervisor position requires. My core values are respect, transparency, and helping each other. I believe that government works best when many people participate. I am hon- ored to be able to serve the community by representing it in the Madison County government. I respectfully ask for your vote this fall. Margaret Milman-Barris,
Oneida
