Colgate Football wins; Coach Hunt receives game ball

Colgate Mens Soccer

The Colgate men’s ice hockey team’s offense exploded for five goals Saturday afternoon as the Raiders downed the Niagara Purple Eagles, 5-1, at class of 1965 Arena.

Jared Cockrell ( Readfield, Maine) scored two goals in the first NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey game of the season while fellow sophomore Bobby McMann (Wainwright, Alberta) and firstyear’s Paul McAvoy (Richmond, Kentucky) and Tyler Jeanson (Carman, Manitoba) also added goals in the win.

The Raiders’ five goals are it’s most in a game since scoring five goals in their first win of the season last year against Maine on Oct. 29.

some needed momentum ahead of next week’s Patriot League opener with a 21-7 road win over Cornell Saturday

he victory also closed a rough week on a better note for Raiders head coach Dan Hunt. Hunt’s father, Frank, died last Saturday night in St. Johnsville, New York, not far fromthe family home in Canajohari­e. He was 80.

Inthe locker roomafter the game, the players presented an emotional Hunt with the game ball.

Colgate’s defensewel­comed Pat Afriyie back to the fold and had a sack party in his honor. A record-breaking sack party, no less.

Nine times the Raiders took down Cornell quarterbac­k Dalton Banks in the Big Red backfield, including career game highs from Nick Wheeler (three) and Connor Buck (two).

They even let Afriyie in on the fun with his 25th career sack early in the second quarter. It was the preseason All-American’s first game action since being injured in the opener at Cal Poly.

Thomas Ives also was back on the field after a two-game injury absence. He led a balanced receiving corps with four catches for 35 yards and his first touchdown of the season.

ColgateWom­ens Soccer

A strong team effort lifted the Colgate women’s soccer team to a big 3-0 road win at American Sunday afternoon in Patriot League play.

The victory runs the Raid- ers’ unbeaten streak to sixstraigh­t games as the Colgate defense secured its fourth shutout of the season. Sophomore Lindsey Wiley got Colgate on the board in the 25th minute before seniors Emily Crichlow and ElizaDoll added insurance goals.

Morrisvill­e State Womens Soccer

Visiting Morrisvill­e State Collegewom­en’s soccer posted a 2-1 comeback victory over host Wells College in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action held Saturday in Aurora.

The win is the second for the Mustangs in conference play as they up their NEAC record to 2-1, posting an overall record of 2-6 to date on the season.

Brianna Sorriento (Wynantskil­l, N.Y.) recorded the win in net for Morrisvill­e State, turning away six, including two in the second half of play.

Morrisvill­e State Volleyball

TheMorrisv­ille StateWomen’s Volleyball teampicked up a pair of non-conference victories on Saturday afternoon, defeating Utica College 3-0 and Southern Vermont 3-0.

TheMustang­s continued to use all of their offensivew­eapons throughout the afternoon. While noMustang reach double digit kills, nine different players notched kills in the two matches.

While the offense continued to impress, it was the serving game for Morrisvill­e that proved to be the biggest difference maker. The Mustangs served 22 aces on the afternoon. Kim Dunkleman ( Williamsvi­lle, N.Y.) tallied five aces against Utica alone and picked up another against Southern Vermont.

The Mustangs improved to 12-3 overall andwill turn their attention to North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) North Division play. Morrisvill­e will travel to SUNY Poly at 7 p.m. on Tuesday before hosting Keuka College on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Morrisvill­e State Womens Cross Country

TheMorrisv­ille StateWomen’s Cross Country squad finished third overall at the Cazenovia College Homecoming Invitation­al on Saturday.

Raylene Wade (Red Creek, N.Y.) paced the Mustangs, finishing 9th overall with at time of 19:36.9.

Junior Bailey Dillabough ran a 20:55.9 which was good enough for 21st place overall, while freshman Victoria Stopen finished in the 26th spot with a time of 21:49.6. Maria Miner (Liverpool, N.Y.), Annie Marchese (Arlington, Utah), Maura Hager (Binghamton, N.Y.), and Emily Cheney (Refield, N.Y.) rounded out the field for Morrisvill­e.

Morrisvill­e State Mens Cross Country

The Morrisvill­e State Men’s Cross Country Team continued to gain valuable experience against North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) runners on Saturday as they competed in the Cazenovia College Homecoming Invitation­al.

Mason Craine (Red Creek, N.Y.) was the first to cross the finish line for Morrisvill­e with at time of 33:11.9 on the 8K course.
