Colgate Day

Every Friday the 13th is a lucky day for Colgate University. But did you ever wonder just why Colgate Day is so special?

Well, in 1817, 13 men — six clergy and seven laymen — met in the frontier settlement of Hamilton with 13 dollars, 13 prayers and 13 articles. During that meeting, the men founded the Baptist Education Society of the State of New York, the cornerstone for what would become known as Colgate University.

That’s not our only reason to celebrate the number 13. The university’s address is 13 Oak Drive. Our zip code is 13346. The first two numbers, standing alone, are the number 13, and the sum of the remaining three totals 13.

Even the university’s motto has a connection with 13. There are — no surprises here — 13 letters in “Deo ac Veritati,” a Latin phrase meaning “For God and For Truth.”

So this superstitious number has a very special meaning on the cam- pus. And in honor of this tradition, every Friday the 13th is declared “Colgate Day.” We invite you to join us on Oct. 13 as we celebrate the history of our great university. Enjoy special savings and deals all day long at the Colgate Bookstore.

The entire bookstore will be 13 percent off (some exclusions apply). For more information, visit www.colgatebookstore.com or call (315) 228-7480.

In addition to hardcover and paperback books, there will be books on CD, DVDs, audio tapes, CDs, and raffle baskets.

It isn’t too late to donate for this wonderful sale. Donations will be accepted until Oct. 18. Books should be in good condition and no more than three years old. The Friends cannot accept encyclopedias, text books or anything that is moldy or damaged.

The Friends of the Library is made up of volunteers who help to prepare for and work the annual sale. The Friends also care for the library garden. A local organization, Ralston’s Supply Company, will provide the tables necessary to hold this event. If you are interested in volunteering to work the book sale, please contact the library and we will forward your name to our Book Sale Committee. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the library’s programs, collections and enhance the building and services that the library offers.

Triskaidekaphobia

No, I didn’t get my fingers on the wrong keys of the typewriter. This is actually a word with a meaning. This week, Friday happens to be the 13th and triskaidekaphobia happens to be “fear of the number 13” and persons who fall into that category are suffering from this phobia.
