BLUFFTON, S. C . » Carl Richard Boehlert (Dick), 92, of Bluffton, S.C., passed away on Friday, Oct. 20, 2017 at the Hilton Head Hospital af ter a brief illness.

He was born on July 7, 1925, in Oneida, N.Y., a son of Carl A. and Grace L. Boehlert. He was a graduate of Oneida High School, Class of 1943. Dick served in the Navy in World War II. He was one of the youngest commission­ed officers in the Navy at the age of 19. He served in the Pacific front, as a Lieutenant JG aboard an LCI. After serving in World War II, he graduated from Cornell University and later received his law degree from Fordham University. He began practicing law in New York City. In New York, he met the love of his life, Marjorie A. Fogarty and they married Sept. 29, 1951. They remained happily married until Marge’s death onOct. 22, 2004. Marge and Dick initially lived in Yonkers, N.Y. where three of their five children were born. In 1959, they moved to Falls Church, Va. where Dick worked as an attorney for the Federal Government. He worked for the General Services Administra­tion and the Department of the Interior before retiring from the Environmen­tal Protection Agency as the Associate General Counsel for EPA’s grants and contracts programs. After retiring from the Federal Government, Dick founded his own consulting group, Contract, Grant and Environmen­tal Consulting, Inc.

He was very active in the affairs of St. James’s Catholic Church, in Falls Church, serving in various capacities. Dick also was very involved in all of his children’s events. He coached CYO basketball, announced at swim team events and was always in the stands to cheer on his children.

Dick also helped design and patent a disposable pet dish. Dick and Marge also subdivided their property and built a housing developmen­t called McLean Glenn and the main street was named after Marge Boehlert, Marbo Ct.

He loved spending time with his children and their many pets, including cats, dogs, rabbits, and horses. As his children began their adult lives, he and Marge began dividing time among their homes in Falls Church, Va., Ocean City, Md., and in Sun City, Bluffton, S.C. Dick moved to Sun City Hilton Head permanentl­y in 2005.

Dick loved golf, and played as often as possible in the Hilton Head area. He enjoyed showing his grandchild­ren the alligators and the low country and telling them stories of his past in upstate New York, the Navy, and in Washington, D.C. He was a devoted Catholic.

CRB, Dick, Dad, Grandpa , Mr. Boehlert. He was called by many names, and was truly one of a kind. He will be sorely missed by so many.

He is survived by five children and their spouses, nine grandchild­ren, and one great-grandchild, recently born in September of this year. His children: Stephen ( Kathy) Boehlert of Gaithersbu­rg, Md., Garry (Trixie Moser) Boehlert of Washington, D.C., Gail (Mark) Boswell of Houston, Texas, Thomas (Wendy) Boehlert of Ellicott City, Md., and Gretchen (Charles) Rudesyle of Bluffton, S.C. His grandchild­ren: Elizabeth (Eric) Lea and his greatgrand­daughter, Bonnelle Lea of Gypsum, Colo.; Marjorie Boehlert of Richmond, Va., Cameron Boswell of Houston, Texas, Chadwick Boswell of Brooklyn, N.Y., Chase Boswell of Houston, Texas, Daniel Boehlert, Bryan Boehlert, Patrick Boehlert of Gaithersbu­rg, Md., and Kellie Boehlert, of Ellicott City, Md. His siblings, two sisters, Sister M. Carleen Boehlert, IHM, of Scranton, Pa., and Barbara Potter, of Oneida Castle; two brothers, James (Rose Marie) Boehlert, of Vestal and Sylvan Beach, and William (Carolyn) Boehlert, of Rio Medina, Texas; a sisterin-law, Mary Boehlert, of Murrieta, Calif.; and many nieces, nephews, greatniece­s, and great-nephews. Dick was predecease­d by two sisters, Frances B. Ironside, on May 30, 2001 and Mary Alice Lyons on Aug. 12, 2017; two brothers, John B. Boehlert, on June 3, 2006 and Edward J. “Ted” Boehlert on April 9, 2009; two brothers-in-law, James D. Ironside on Dec. 14, 1982 and Robert W. Potter, on June 15, 2011.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Oct. 27, with a Funeral Mass beginning at 10:30 a.m. at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 31 St. Gregory Drive, Bluffton, S.C. 29909. Interment will take place on Monday, Oct. 30, 2017 at 1 p.m. in Quantico National Cemetery, 18424 Joplin Road, Triangle, Va. 22172. Family and friends are invited and may call on Thursday from 5-7 p.m. at Sauls Funeral Home of Bluffton, 90 Simmonsvil­le Road, Bluffton, S.C. 29910, 843- 8155535. Local arrangemen­ts have been entrusted to the Ironside Funeral Home, Inc., Oneida.
