Boys Cross Country

NEW HARTFORD, ROME FREE ACADEMY, VERNONVERO­NA-SHERRILL » Mike Dunne’s VVS Red Devil squad took first place in Race 2 and third place overall after the race merger at Saturday’sAdirondac­k Invitation­al in Boonville.

Owen Walker led VVS runners with a 17:08.9, while Andrew Wright (18:17.7), Trevor Kline (18:21), Robbie VanDresar (18:21), Joseph Guertin (18:52.5), and Damien Muessig (18:56.3) all finished under the 19-minute mark.

“We had our No. 2 and No. 3 runners resting, but Andrew Wright led a pack that included Robbie Vandresar and Trevor Kline to a 15th, 17th, 18th finish. Joseph Guertin filled out the top 5 with a 24th place finish. Damien Muessig was just behind in 26th place,” Dunne said. “Despite finishing as the VVS 6th man, Damien displaced at least 2 runners from every other team in the race, so our depth and 4-10 runners were a major factor in our success today. That is a great sign with sectionals a week away.”

Girls Tennis

Oneida’s tennis duo of Brianna Lauretti and Lauren Skibitski advanced to the second round of the New York State Individual Tennis Championsh­ips with a 6-3, 6- 4 victory over Union Endicott’s Brianna Harmon and Cailey Hayes. However, Lauretti and Skibitski’s run came to an end in the second round with a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Half Hollow Hills East’s Lauren Cherkin and Ariana Malik. hockey team blanked the Arizona State Sun Devils, 3-0, at Class of 1965 Arena.

Colgate’s shutout was its first since Feb. 26, 2016 in a 2-0 shutout of Rensselaer while it’s the Raiders first non- conference shutout since Oct. 31, 2014 against Mercyhurst.

The Raiders improve to 3-2-2 on the season with their third win at home while the Sun Devils fall to 1-5-1 and arewinless in their last six games.

Colgate Women’s Soccer

Boston University got out to an early lead and held on the second quarter following a Raiders’ punt. The senior intercepte­d a firstdown pass fromHackle­r, returning it to the Lakers’ 23. Marshall needed one play to put his team back in front, finding Brandon Otts for a 23-yard score and a 13-7 advantage.

Fox made another big play on the ensuing Skaneatele­s possession, making a tackle in the backfield on second down. The Lakers were eventually forced to punt and the kick went out of bounds at their own 23, setting the Raiders up in prime scoring position. Canastota couldn’t capitalize, however, turning the ball to defeat the Colgate women’s soccer team 3-1 in the regular-season finale Sunday afternoon. Despite the loss, the Raiders have secured a Patriot League Quarterfin­al home game Tuesday night and the No. 4 seed in the tournament.

Colgate Women’s Volleyball

The Colgate volleyball team trailed 2-1, but rallied to win the final two sets for a big 3-2 win at secondplac­e Navy Saturday afternoon. Colgate has now won three-straight league games and five of its last six. The Raiders improve to 14-9 on the seasonand5-6 in thePatriot League.

Skaneatele­s countered with an 11-play, 77-yard scoring drive to take its first lead. Hackler overcame a pair of false starts, finding running room for an 18yard gain on 3rd and 16 before connecting withWamp for a 23-yard gain on 2nd and 15. The duo connected twice more on the drive, first for a 20-yard pickup to the Canastota 25. Hackler hit Wamp again three plays later, lofting a pass in the end zone that his receiver went up and grabbed for a 13-yard touchdown.

“My coach has been telling me throughout the whole season I have to go up and get the ball,” said Wamp. “I had the perfect opportunit­y. I went up, grabbed it, came down with it. It was a fantastic throw really good day Saturday – all across the Empire State.

While the Raiders were taking care of business against Bucknell to the tune of a 40-3 Senior Day thumping, Fordham vaulted Colgate back into the Patriot League championsh­ip picture with a 45-35 upset of Lehigh in the Bronx.

The Raiders heading into a bye week are now 3-1 in conference play, a halfgame ahead of both Lehigh and Lafayette at 2-1.

Morrisvill­e State Women’s Volleyball

The Morrisvill­e State Women’s Volleyball team split a pair of matches at Hamilton College on Saturday afternoon, falling to the host Continenta­ls 3-1 in the opener but topping St. from Hackler.”

Marshall finished the first half with 188 yards on the ground but was limited to 54 yards in the second half as the Lakers got back into the game.

Hackler marched Ska- Lawrence 3-1 in the second match.

Colgate Men’s Ice Hockey

Tyler Penner ( Winnipeg, Manitoba) scored the game-tying goal with 12:10 left in the third period Saturday evening as the Colgate men’s ice hockey team picked up a 1-1 tie in overtime with the Arizona State Sun Devils in front of a sold out crowd at Class of 1965 Arena.

The Colgate men’s soccer team earned a crucial 2-1 win over Navy Sunday afternoon to stay alive in the battle for a Patriot League Tournament spot on Senior Day at Beyer- Small ’76 Field. neateles down the field to knot the score again on the opening possession of the second half. The defenses dominated the remainder of the period as the team’s jockeyed for field position. Skaneatele­s had the edge in that department early in the fourth quarter, moving inside the Canastota 20. Brooks made sure the drive stalled there, sacking Hackler on third down before a botched snap on fourth resulted in a turnover on downs.
