Outdoor spotlight a boon for school

-

Holy Cross Academy would like to thank Marty Winchell and the members of the Oneida American Legion Post 169 for the gift of an outdoor spotlight to illuminate the American flag displayed in front of school.

From the inception of Holy Cross Academy, now celebrating our 20th year, the school has included citizenship and patriotism into its curriculum and activities. The flag has always had a place of honor at our building and has been cared for by students who are Boy Scouts, including Eagles, and others who understand its significance and protocol.

The flag has been a venue of pledge and prayer for various events, including the 9/11 remembrance each year, the “See You at the Pole” gatherings, and half-staff memorials, most recently in tribute to those lost in the Las Vegas massacre.

Each morning, students pledge allegiance to the flag in their classrooms. The National Anthem has been an important part of our concerts, and our choir has been invited to sing “The Star Spangled Banner” at major league baseball games and at Syracuse University basketball games.

Holy Cross has sent many high school juniors to Boys State courtesy of the American Legion Post. We are very proud of several of our graduates who are currently serving in the military, and of our West Point graduate who is now in Afghanistan. Two of our teachers who are Army veterans are recognized each year on Veterans Day and thanked for their service.

The outdoor spotlight enhances the attention given to our flag. We sincerely appreciate their gift.

Cross Academy
