SHERRILL » Robert V. Wright Sr., 84, of 158 Cottage Place, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2017, at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center after being a patient for four days.

He was born on Oct. 20, 1933, in Oneida, a son of Francis M. and Alice M. Metcher Wright. Bob was a graduate of VVSHigh School, Class of 1953 and went on to attend Powelson Business Institute.

On Feb. 25, 1955, Bob was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Bertha Hitchings in Oxford, N.Y.

Bob was employed as a flight line foreman and an air plane refueler for Griffiss Air Force Base.

Bob was an avid bowler and golfer, and had every golfer’s dream of a hole-inone at Peter’ s Patch( Pleasant Knolls ). He was a member of C NY Bluegrass Associatio­n. He enjoyed watching World War II movies especially his favorite movie, “A Bridge Too Far.” He was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan, Cleveland Browns fan, and a closet New York Yankee fan. In the late 1950s, he was a stock car driver at theUticaRo­me Speedway. He was a very regular attendee of the Sherrill Summer Concert Series in the Park.

Surviving besides his loving wife of 62 years, Bertha, are six children, Michael Wright, Paula Wright, Susan Wright, David (Mona) Wright, all of Sherrill, Kevin (Michelle) Wright, of Albuquerqu­e, N.M., and James (Melissa) Wright, of Chittenang­o; 10 grandchild­ren; 10 great-grandchild­ren; and several nieces and nephews. Bob was predecease­d by a son, Robert V. Wright Jr., on Nov. 23, 2013, and a brother, Richard Wright, on Nov. 11, 2016.

A graveside service will be held at Oneida Castle Cemetery at a date to be announced. There are no calling hours. Arrangemen­ts have been entrusted to the Ironside Funeral Home, Inc., 342 Main St., Oneida. Memorial contributi­ons may bemade in Bob’s memory to the Sherrill-Kenwood Volunteer Fire Dept.
