Camp Lookout promotes growth

- By Joanne Ernenwein Member, Camp Lookout Board of Di rectors

EATON » At Camp Lookout in Madison County, the staff provides an overall program of fun while engaging in educational and safe camp activities that will help children ages 8-13 to thrive physically and emotionally.

Campers, counselors and board members placed painted rocks in the garden as part of the Nature’s Highway craft program. Each rock was chosen and created by campers throughout the summer and offers words of encouragement or beautiful images to anyone who sees them.

Positive surroundings and constant feedback allow children to gain a special perspective regarding their importance and place in the world as they learn strategies

to meet life’s challenges. By developing life skills necessary for positive, productive relationships with peers, family members, and other adults in their lives, campers leave at the end of the week with a true sense of community.

Annually the camp provides a favorable environment for several hundred of our region’s youths. Through cooperative game playing to build group trust and self-awareness, Camp Lookout offers equal opportunity for all campers regardless of circumstances. Camper selection is determined without regard to race, color, sex, age, handicaps, religion, or national origin. Applications are available in the spring.

“The board of directors and staffwishes to thank all whomade this camping season successful for the 700 youth who attended Camp Lookout this summer,” said camp director Jim Burton. “Some camperswould never have had an opportunity to learn how to swim, canoe, identify plants and animals, or use new skills to learn ways of handling conflict when it arises. Finding the strength within oneself to overcome obstacles and become a better person is what Camp Lookout prides itself on. The generosity of our donors helps to make this possible.”
