Take special care when out ice fishing

-

As of last weekend, most of the popular ice fishing spots reported six to seven inches of ice.

While most upstate residents suffered through the recent frigid weather the past couple weeks, there were some people who actually welcomed it. Ice fishermen watched with glee as the temperatures plummeted below zero because it meant that solid ice was forming on most of the central New York lakes and ponds. As of last weekend most of the popular ice fishing spots reported six or seven inches of ice and fish were biting.

However, the weather forecast for this week casts some doubt on the situation. In addition to the warmer weather there was the forecast for heavy rains and possible flooding of some streams. This could seriously weaken the ice that has already formed. Heavy rains and rising water levels could result in breakup of ice or melting the ice cap. It will eventually turn colder and form more ice but in the meantime ice fishermen are urged to use caution.

Four inches or more of solid ice is considered to be safe for anglers accessing ice on foot. Ice anglers should note that ice thickness can vary on every body of water and even on the same body of water. Clear black ice is stronger than slush ice.

Anglers should be particularly wary of areas of moving water and around boat docks and houses where bubblers may be installed to reduce ice buildup. The presence of snowmobile tracks or footprints on the ice should not be considered as evidence of safe ice conditions. Individuals are strongly encouraged to check ice conditions and avoid situations that appear to present even a remote risk. Test-
