The Oneida Daily Dispatch (Oneida, NY)
Exhibit explores food and society
HAMILTON, N.Y. » A new exhibition focused on foodways within Central New York opens to the public Thursday, Feb. 8, at Colgate’s Longyear Museum of Anthropology.
“Setting the Table: Food, Place, Community” is a student-curated exhibition exploring themes of indigenous food sovereignty, justice and access, economic development, memory and identity with a focus on local agriculture, Haudenosaunee nations, and international communities.
What is the role of food in our lives? Why do the foods we eat matter? How is food connected to broader cultural, political, and economic issues? The exhibition will include archaeological objects of the Oneida from the permanent collection of the Longyear, as well as images and objects representing the stories of international students, immigrants, local farmers and businesses, and Haudenosaunee communities.
An opening reception will take place on Feb. 8, at 4:30 p.m. at the Longyear (Alumni Hall, Second Floor) with introductory remarks at 5 p.m. by Anja Chávez, director of university museums; Christy DeLair, associate curator; and stu- dent curators. “Setting the Table” will be open to the public through June 3.
Related programming will include a cooking demonstration and conversation about food and memory with chef Tamana Tajik, a lecture on indigenous food projects by Professor Elizabeth Hoover (Brown University), and a panel on Sustainable Beer and Food at Good Nature Farm Brewery. More information is available on the museum website or by following the museum on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
