Bible Study series focuses on parables
VERONA, N.Y. » The Three Voices Presbyterian Congregation will start a new multi-week Bible Study on Sunday, Feb. 11 focusing on the Parables of Jesus.
According to Michael Yeoman, co-pastor of the Three Voices, Jesus’ parables are short stories that teach a moral or spiritual lesson by analogy or similarity. They are often stories based on the agricultural life that was intimately familiar to Jesus’ original first century au- dience. Some aspect of an unfamiliar concept, suchas the kingdom of God, were compared to something from everyday life that could more easily be understood by the audience.
Yeoman said that it is the lesson of a parable that is most important to study and understand. “The story itself is not as important as the meaning,” he said. “The story may or may not be literally true.”
Approximately 37 parables will be discussed dur- ing this multi-week bible study. Participants do not have to attend every session as several newparableswill be discussed each week.
The first sessions will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Verona beginning at 8:45 a.m. Sessions will move to the Cochran Memorial Presbyterian Church in March. The public is invited to participate in this free program. For more information, contact the church offices at 315-363-0492.
