Chittenango girls capture Section III Class B win
CHITTENANGO, N.Y. » Thirty-six years ago, the Chittenango Bears girls volleyball team brought home the sectional title.
What came next was a thirty-five year drought.
After breaking the drought by taking home the sectional title last year, the Bears did not want to wait another thirty-five years for their next title.
The 2017-18 Section III girls volleyball season came to a close Saturday evening with the first seeded Chittenango Bears hosting the thirdseeded Lowville Red Raiders, with the Bears coming out victorious, sweeping their opponents 25-7, 25-13, 25-12.
Prior to Saturday night’s matchup, the Bears had convincing victories over eight seed South Jefferson as well as fifth seed Oneida, sweeping both their opponents. Lowville, on the other hand, also had a dominant performance over sixth seed Christian Brothers Academy, before managing an upset over second seeded Canastota.
Throughout the 2017-2018 season, the Bears have been led by the consistently dominant, and last year’s Onondaga High School League Player of the Year, middle hitter Tyla Cutrie. However, Cutrie isn’t the only star. Last year, senior outside hitter Megan Mayer and senior setter Tiffany Scofield were both named to the first team All-OHSL, along with senior outside hitter Alyssa Bates and junior setter Shelby Maring earning second-team accolades.
