Chittenang­o boys advance to Class B hoops semifinal

CHITTENANG­O72, LOWVILLE 47 » Three Bears reached double figures for Chittenang­o to help secure a 72-47 win over Lowville in Section III Class B quarterfin­al action on Tuesday. Zach Falkenburg led Chittenang­o and all scorers with 20 points. Teammate Sam Hill added 15 points for the Bears, followed by Dylan Voutsinas with 14.

Chittenang­o jumped out to a 16-5 lead at the end of the first before outscoring Lowville 20-13 in the second frame of action to carry a 36-18 lead into the intermissi­on. Lowville stole back three points in a 1916 third, but the Bears were too much down the stretch.

With the victory, Chittenang­o advances to the Class B semifinals where a familiar opponent awaits in Vernon-Verona- Sherrill. The two Class B heavyweigh­ts met in the semifinals during the 2016-17 season, with Chittenang­o emerging victorious with a HOMER 56, ONEIDA 46 » After handing the Section III Class B No. 4 seed Holland Patent a defeat on Friday, the upset-minded No. 13 Oneida boys hoops side was on the road Tuesday for a contest with No. 5 Homer.

Jeff Didio’s Oneida team continued to prove it was a dangerous No. 13 seed, taking a 30-28 lead into the halftime intermissi­on.

Homer was not interested in falling victim to another Oneida upset however, snatching the lead with a 15-6 third quarter to go up 43-36 before keeping the visitors at bay in the fourth to seal it, 56-46.

Justin Wainwright led Homer and all scorers with 18 points, followed by teammate Stephen Walter with 16.

Oneida was paced by John Jones’ 16 points. Fellow senior Alex Vaccaro added 14 points, netting Dakota Stauber led McGraw and all scorers with a 24-point performanc­e to fuel a 63-56 win over Hamilton in Section III Class D quarterfin­al play on Tuesday.

Kevin Shorts added 15 for McGraw and teammate Chase Curtis chipped in with 11.

Hamiltonwa­s paced by a 20-point effort from Trevor Dow, followed by 11 points from Ryan Hunt.

McGraw led by seven at the end of the first, outscoring their guests 16-9 to open play. Hamilton came back in the second to cut the deficit to five, 34-29, at the halftime break.

McGraw kept Hamilton at bay in the third, turning up the pace on offense with a 23-point quarter for a 14-point lead heading into the final quarter of play. Hamilton edged closer in the fourth, but the Eagles held on for the win and will
