Olympic Games are always fascinating

- Carol Weimer Canastota Corner

Can I let another Olympic Games go by and not at least try to write about them?

Everything seemed to come to an almost stand still for those who are very sportsminded and even for those who might not be but certainly were drawn in to the television and all that went on for the past week and more. Some who weren’t at all interested had their own words and minds to express as many of their regular programs were preempted because of the Games. The Winter Olympics I always enjoy, but summers ones I’m just not as interested as I love all of the different challenges the athletes are put to their tests and each and every one wants to come home with the GOLD, but Silver and Bronze are all right too if they can’t get the Gold.

At PyeongChang not only did we learn a lot about all the different competitions in the various categories (I couldn’t keep up) it was interesting to listen in on the different commentators who at times fill us in and give us a little sideline as to what was going on in South Korea with all of the different nations attending and the home life of residents in South Korea. Not very often, but just a glimpse you would catch if you lis- tened to them instead of taking advantage of a break and leaving the TV for a minute or two to take care of necessary needs because you did have a family perhaps that had needs if they were glued to the set, too. Viewers did have to eat.

I didn’t think I had the interest in some of the programs being offered, but as they would sometimes come on they would catch a few minutes of my interest. Not being a real sports fan of many types I had to watch the bobsled in the different one, two and four many categories as well as the luge. I tried not to miss any of them. Also all of the different categories in the skiing, skating, snowboarding. Didn’t they give you tremendous thrills?

Being a woman, watching the skating skills of both men and women, and couples but also we women naturally had to see all of the different array of costumes, the sparkles, designs and fabrics, etc. They were quite often described by the narrators as they went gliding across your screens. And the new broader TV screen made viewing even more appreciated.

I have only brushed across the Olympics and my view which I’m sure puts only a drop in the bucket. The USA came home fourth in the medals table, not as good as last Winter Olympics but great and the women’s hockey team. Congratulations!
